A Mercedes-Benz SLK230 is a fun to drive compact roadster that was initially designed to compete with the Porsche Boxster and BMW Z3. The SLK-Class was launched in Europe for the 1996 model year and was built on the R170 platform; with the SLK being available in the US for the 1997 model year. One of the cool features of the SLK was the retractable hardtop, which was one of the first modern hardtop convertibles. In 2005 the SLK-Class was totally redesigned with the introduction of the sleek R171 chassis.
