The Mercedes-Benz ML320 is a variant of the popular M-Class SUV (sport utility vehicle) that was produced as part of the first generation of the M-Class (W163) introduced as a 1998 model and produced for six years before being replaced by the ML350 in 2004. The ML320 has a 3.2L V6 engine and was the first M-Class produced but became the base model when the V8 powered ML430 appeared a year later in 1999. The ML320 gained popularity before it was even released when a modified W163 appeared the film ""Jurassic Park 2: The lost world"" which was released in 1997, which was a great way to spark the public's interest. ML320s could seat 5 or 7 passengers with an optional third row seat, and was noted for its remarkable safety sporting features such as stability control, side impact airbags, and occupant detection sensors for the passenger's front airbag. The M-class was also the first luxury SUV to have stability control, a system which is shown to greatly reduce the risk of rollover accidents which are common with larger SUV type vehicles that have a higher center of gravity. The ML320 was voted the ""North American Truck of the Year"" in 1998 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
