Home Mechanic

Vehicle: 2001 Volvo V70 XC AWD What a miracle! Gave me three more years of life from an alternator because this went bad first. Had to replace the rest of the alternator eventually when it mechanically wore out, but this was a very inexpensive fix that extended that alternator's life by 50k miles. I highly recommend this product, especially if your alternator seems mechanically fine.

Low Voltage Fix

2001 Volvo V70 2.4T. Had a few hard starts the week preceding a hot day in Texas on the freeway. AC and radio on. Daytime running lights on. Low Voltage warning pops up. Switched off everything, but the warning persists, and then I lose spark; the engine cuts. Got a jump from a friend, but car is running off battery power only, so had to swap a fresh battery in to get it home. Electrical System Service warning now displayed. Definitely the alternator. Read a bit and found that the voltage regulator was more likely to fail than the entire alternator unit. Spent a few hours to move power steering pump from atop, and separate alternator body from the compressor below. Swapped out the regulator (simple - 3 screws). Charged up the battery and now the car runs and starts reliably. Performance is back, since I believe I'm getting proper ignition now. Definitely try this fix if you are having voltage problems. Replacing the entire alternator would cost 5-10x as much, minus labor. It took some time for the unit to fail, but looking back, I did have occasional hard starts or "Low Voltage" in slow heavy traffic.

Some of the reviewers above may have been rewarded for their positive & negative reviews. We don't hold anything back.
