The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is an electronic component that monitors the rotational speed of the transmission or wheels and sends this data to the engine control unit (ECU) and instrument cluster. This information is critical for accurate speedometer readings, transmission shift timing, cruise control operation, and overall engine management. Typically constructed with a magnetic or hall-effect sensor design, the VSS is built for durability and precise signal output under varying driving conditions.

Vehicle Speed Sensor Failure Symptoms
  • Inaccurate or non-functioning speedometer – caused by faulty or missing speed signals.
  • Erratic transmission shifting – due to incorrect data being sent to the ECU.
  • Illuminated check engine light (CEL) or ABS warning light – often accompanied by diagnostic trouble codes related to speed sensor failure.

Yes, this sensor is located behind the valve body on the housing of the transmission. This does not have to be replaced in pairs.
