Product Information

While it is reported to be a very robust and reliable engine, the Volvo V8 jointly designed and built by Yamaha has some common problems, one of which being oil leaks. The parts in this kit include all necessary seals to reseal the valve covers and associated assemblies such as the intake and exhaust manifold, valve cover grommets, timing solenoids, and power steering hose O-Ring since it must be disconnected.

Also included are two PCV hoses which are usually cooked, and good to replace when you have easy access. Also recommended but not required when doing this reseal are:

For a comprehensive kit to do the timing cover seals as well, another common oil leak area, and other wear components for a complete "Do it and forget it" service, see [KIT-5160851]

Engine Valve Cover Gasket Set

The valve cover gasket seals the valve cover to the uppermost portion of your engine’s cylinder head and keeps oil and oil vapors from leaking at that connection. It must have some amount of crush or elasticity to fill in gaps between the two surfaces, sealing the connection. Typically on most modern vehicles the valve cover gasket is made from rubber or other elastomer materials. Sometimes this can be just a rubber gasket, and others it may be reinforced with metals or other materials to lend more strength and rigidity to the application.

Older classic European cars may use a cork or similar natural material. Both are sensitive to the installation process and tightening torques, but you must take extra special care with cork gaskets to avoid crushing the gasket and causing a leak.

Engine Valve Cover Gasket Set Failure Symptoms
  • Age: As a rubber valve cover gasket ages, it will become hard and brittle, eventually allowing oil to leak at the valve cover and cylinder head junction. Cork and natural materials will begin to break down and allow Oil to pass
  • Physical Damage: Typically this is from incorrect installation. Using too much tightening torque on the valve cover gasket bolts or fasteners can cause physical damage to the gasket but overcompressing or crushing it beyond its ability to seal the surface of the valve cover and the cylinder head.
  • Chemical Damage: Using incompatible chemical gasket maker or sealing agents can cause reactions and failure of the gasket itself. Sometimes this can be because of the material itself, or the design of the gasket and the way it is intended to be sealed by the manufacturer.
  • Obvious Oil leaks: A noticeable engine oil leak is the most common symptom of a bad valve cover gasket. This can appear in several different ways, the most common of which is oil seepage or obvious leaks running down the cylinder head from the valve cover.
  • Mysterious Oil Leaks: Because of airflow through the engine bay and the exact conditions under which a valve cover gasket leaks, it is possible to have a “mystery” oil leak where oil residue and moisture gather in an unusual or unlikely spot. If you see this and have no other obvious causes, a quick degrease and careful monitoring could point you in the direction of a bad valve cover gasket
  • Air intake leaks/faults: Because the valve cover gasket is a crucial seal for the engine, a completely failed or very bad valve cover gasket leak can result in a check engine light or rough running due to incorrect airflow either getting inside the engine or escaping through the leak.
  • Burning oil smell: One of the most common engine oil leaks is from the valve cover gasket, and it is common for oil to leak while the car is sitting. Once you start the engine and begin to drive the car, the oil that has collected on the exhaust manifold will burn off, creating a noticeable oil smell while driving.

About Reinz

Founded by Hugo Reinz in 1920, Reinz has been known for the manufacturing of Automotive gaskets for over 90 years. For almost a century Reinz has provided gaskets and sealing products for both auto manufacturers and as an aftermarket solution for car enthusiasts. Their full catalog features over 15,000 different products, providing a great selection for excellent value. Way back in 1962 Reinz became the (OEM) original equipment manufacturer for the prestigious Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen car companies, a strong partnership that still continues to this day. The company continues to innovate and stay well ahead of the curve. For example, Reinz stopped using asbestos in their gaskets 12 years before it was banned in Germany in 1993. Reinz performs because every part they manufacture meets OEM standards – meaning you're getting great value that you can believe in. Many brands and models use sealing solutions from Reinz. In 1993 Reinx became a partner to the American company, Dana, to form the largest manufactures of components for automobile and commercial vehicles. The Gasket segment of Dana was Victor at the time ahich was then merged with Reinz to form the brand name of "Victor Reinz".

Great kit but
Mechanic told me it's a great kit, but is missing fuel injector o-rings. He had to find them and order them. Unfortunately, that led in a delay for my car for about a week. I also purchased the throttle body gasket separately.

Review Correction!
Correction! Even though FCP confirmed part number 988119 was incorrect as per my vin for the power steering pump o-ring (and so did the volvo dealership) it turns out 988119 WAS correct after all. Go figure! Therefore, this kit was perfect and my V8 is running fantastic.

Power Steering O-Ring Incorrect for 2010 S80 V8
The part number 988119 is incorrect as per my vin. It should be part number 31202895. Perhaps volvo made changes to this o-ring because it was known to fail and leak fluid over the alternator? Not sure. In any case, FCP came through with fantastic customer service to expedite the correct replacement out to me. Just for everyone's knowledge, you technically do not need to remove the Power Steering Pump to perform this job. There's one lower intake bolt that is difficult to remove with the pump in place, but if you take a skinny 1/4 drive 10mm socket and grind it down some to make it thinner, you can get it no problem. I'm choosing to replace the PSP o-rings while the intakes are removed because of easier access. Thanks FCP!

2006 Volvo xc90 v8
Great kit. Everything arrive as shown. Fitment was exact to my 2006 volvo xc90 v8. First time for me it was a weekend install. Get fuel injector orings if you do this job! I am happy with everything. I now have 7000 mile on since installing the kit. No leaks and no issues.

Great kit
This has everything you need to get by but I would also get the power steering O rings and a new PCV valve to make this a complete kit. Dont skimp out on the o rings or you might not be able to get your power steering back to normal after this job.

Volvo Valve Cover Gasket Kit
All parts are of high quality material. I use to think the price is a bit high but I am hoping the Lifetime Guarantee kicks in when I need it most. This kit for my Volvo was a perfect buy. Also, customers service was very friendly and knowledgeable with my questions. I did this job myself and it took me the whole weekend. This vehicle has many parts in the way, and many bolts. For reference, I would but bolts and nuts in clear sandwich bags and label then as you go. Don't forget to take many pictures as well. All I think that is needed in a FCP EURO order is a free t-shirt or something to wear while I am doing this jobs. I would have like to represent FCP EURO while working. :) Again. Thank you.

Great Value
I ordered this to repair my heavily leaking valve covers on my 2008 S80 V8 with 110k miles. I also recommend ordering 8 of part number 30731386 so you can replace your fuel injector seals while you have everything apart. Thanks FCP!

Question Posted by Stephen
Does this kit include the 14 sealing plugs (30741326)? I see them in the pic, but not the description. Thanks

Yes, they come with the valve cover gaskets.
Question Posted by a customer
Is their a video or installation instructions for removal of the old and install of the new parts?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Sorry, we do not currently have an instruction video for this part, but you may have luck finding one online for the Yamaha V8 used by Volvo.
Question Posted by a customer
Love the fact that you guys make kits for most-common issues like this... Is there anything else you might recommend that I do while I'm in there? For example, the kit includes PCV hoses, should I replace the PCV or anything else also??
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
It wouldn't be a bad time to replace the PCV valve, you'll need p/n 30720100.
