Volvo Intercooler System diagram for XC40
An intercooler pipe (also called a charge pipe or boost pipe) is part of a turbocharged or supercharged engine’s air intake system. It connects the turbocharger or supercharger to the intercooler, and then from the intercooler to the intake manifold.
Its job is to carry compressed air from the turbo/supercharger to the intercooler (where the air is cooled) and then deliver that cooled, denser air to the engine for better combustion and performance. Intercooler pipes are typically made from aluminum, stainless steel, or reinforced silicone to handle high pressure and heat.
Intercooler Pipe Failure Symptoms- Loss of Power / Poor Acceleration: Leaks reduce boost pressure, causing sluggish performance.
- Hissing or Whistling Noise Under Boost: Air escaping through a crack or loose clamp makes a noticeable sound.
- Check Engine Light (CEL): Often accompanied by codes for underboost or airflow issues (e.g., P0299).
