Product Information

This Trunk Strut is OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) in this application, meaning this part is made by the same company that made the part for your car when it was built. Expect the same quality and fitment as the original genuine part, but at a greater savings then purchasing from the Dealer.

Replacing your trunk struts keeps your vehicle feeling new and fresh. A simple cost effective way to keep your 850 in tip top shape.

Trunk Lid Lift Support

The trunk lid lift support, also sometimes called a trunk strut or trunk shock, is a gas-charged cylinder that helps support and lift the trunk lid of a vehicle. Some trunk lift supports are also electric or hydraulic depending on the vehicle’s equipment. The trunk lift support assists the opening of the trunk or hatch, making it easier to open and sometimes opening it automatically. When you open the trunk, the lifting rod extends to push the lid open, ensuring it stays in place. Trunk lid supports remove the need to hold the trunk while loading and unloading and prevent it from slamming shut accidentally. Most European vehicles have a pair of supports, but occasionally there is just one. They are usually held onto the body and the trunk via posts and retaining clips, making them an easy DIY for most vehicle owners.

As a vehicle ages and the trunk support goes through hundreds of actuations, trunk lid lift supports will wear out and fail primarily due to the internal seal on the extending rod failing and losing pressure. When that happens, the trunk lid will feel heavier to open and slam shut unexpectedly. When replacing trunk lid supports that use a flat clip and post-mounting design, we recommend wearing some type of mechanic gloves since the retaining clips can be somewhat sharp and move unexpectedly when applying leverage with a screwdriver.

Trunk Lid Lift Support Failure Symptoms
  • Internal Leaks: If the gas piston is leaking internally, the trunk lid lift support won’t be able to leverage the trunk open
  • Age/Corrosion/Rust: If the trunk lift supports are exposed to the elements or are very old, it could hinder smooth operation, causing dead spots in the operation

Trunk Piston Rods
These where a bit difficult to install at first, but then after the first one was in, the second one went right in with no problem. They work great and now the dam trunk doesn't fall on my head any more! Great product though.

Great Replacements
My sister car had one of these go down on her 850. Bought some aftermarket ones of amazon and was totally the wrong ones. FCP had me covered, exact replacements to oem ones a Decently annoying to get on and to snap in on the body end, but after some work they will snap in fine. Connect the trunk end to trunk and your trunk will operate again without crashing down.

These OEM trunk struts used to go for $40+ each (and still do at most places), so I always bought the aftermarket $15 ones, and they'd be lucky to last 6 months, and i'd even have parts crack off when installing them. Now that you can get the Stabilus OEM from FCP at only $27 each, do it! They are the only ones that last.

The Guy in the driveway, working on the car.
Does what it ought. I have a spoiler (cool, I know) and I think it may still be a little heavy for these, but I don't know what it would have been like when new, so I'm pleased at the improvement anyway.

Great Replacement
My trunk would always slam down so hard, the struts completely gave out! These must have come down in price as they were more than double when I got them, great news for those of you who need to replace yours! Has worked perfect for 2+ years now...

Questions & Answers

Ask a question
Question Posted by a customer
What are the benefits of new struts other that the obvious? My trunk with spoiler is very heavy to lift but stays up when I lift it. While closing I have to hold it so it does not slam shut. Will new struts prevent the trunk from slamming shut and will it make opening easier?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Yes, it will make it both easier to open and shut softly preventing damage to the hatch, hinges, and lights.
Question Posted by a customer
I have a Volvo 850 with an aftermarket spoiler. Do I need the trunk struts for cars with a spoiler or without a spoiler? Do the versions have different connections or is the spoiler version just more heavy duty to handle the extra weight?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
We can't say for sure since we don't have the car in front of us, and Volvo does not provide product information like that. However, it is reasonable to say the connections are the same, and the spring rate is the only difference to account for the extra added weight of the spoiler.
