How Can I Determine If I Have a TRW, ZF, or Cam Gear Rack

You can determine what type of Rack & Pinon was originally installed on the car by locating a service plate found on the Trunk frame or Door pillar. It will list many different components, with one being the Steering Gear. On this plate, to the right of the words steering gear you will see a number - 2345. The numbers 2, 4, or 5 designates a Cam Gear rack was used, number 3 designates a ZF rack was used.

Another way to tell is to look at the inner tie rod. If the boot clamps straight onto the tie rod shaft, this is a CAM steering rack. If the boot clamps down onto a disk that has a larger diameter than the inner tie rod shaft, then this is a ZF rack.

Steering Tie Rod End Kit

The tie rods of your vehicle play a critical role as they're the link between the power steering rack and pinion and the wheel spindle. Tie rod ends contain ball joints that tend to wear out over time due to constant wear and tear. When the ball joints within the tie rod wear out, it allows for play within the wheels which can throw off your alignment and cause uneven tire wear. Its always encouraged to check your tie rod ends for play as well as tires for uneven wear at every service interval. When replacing worn tie rod ends its always recommend to replace them in pairs as well as to perform an alignment.

Tie Rod Kit
It's nice getting all these in one kit, easy install, the original inner tie rods had a lot of play, this tightened up the steering (less play).

Would be perfect, if it fit my model.
I ordered for a 1987 245 DL, the thread on the inner tie rods is a male a much narrower than the tie rods I am replacing. My current rods are female and a larger diameter. The putter ends seem the right fit, so I don’t know what reason there is for the variance between models. It is however a nice kit to get all the parts at one time.

Yes, the ZF Rack will have an inner tie rod end with a rubber grommet, the CAM brand rack will have a inner tie rod that does not have the rubber grommet.
