Suspension Strut Assembly

If your ride feels a little bouncy or you can feel clunks in the suspension while it's going over bumps it is likely due to worn strut assemblies and shock absorbers. The purpose of the strut assembly is it acts as a central pivot point for the suspension while housing the coil spring. It also dampens the compression and rebound of the coil spring as the suspension moves up and down. When replacing suspension components it is highly recommended to replace them in pairs.

Looks good, included isolator!
Looks just like the factory ones I took out. The ones I received INCLUDED new rubber lower spring isolators (31200486)! As pictured, they do not include the ABS sensor retainer, which unfortunately does not seem to be able to be transferred from the old ones.

Definitely better handling than before. Fits rather well when you have the right spring. If you have a doubt about a spring buy one or a full assembly. I had one assembly that must have come from some wrecker and that was not a proper fit, I had to remove the rubber seat.

Only the best for our Volvo's
It doesn't pay to cheap out on your suspension parts, I know from past experience. I purchased Sachs front/rear sets for my wife's '04 Volvo XC70 along with Sachs strut mount upper spring seats and bump stops. Cheap shocks won't last and will provide a sloppy/hard ride.

Stock strut
This is the OEM replacement strut, fits and works perfectly and seems to be the only option available for the XC70.

With the end of ST vs Advantage differentiation, what Sachs offers now in terms of performance and durability? ST-only, Advantage-only, something in between? In other words, are these struts heavy duty?

These are OEM, not heavy duty. These struts offer a twin tube design which has Micro-Polished Chrome Piston Rods. The rods have been hardened for maximum strength to provide the longest service life. The chrome finish helps fight rust while the low-friction surface effectively prevents seal leakage. As far as comfort and performance, they us a banded Piston. Their engineered polymer piston band immediately responds to suspension movements even at slow speeds. The piston band effectively seals the working cylinder allowing the valves to operate at 100% efficiency. Valves with a banded piston can be finely tuned for specific vehicles to consistently provide the intended comfort and performance. The struts also use a low friction seal which uses a special NBR rubber which is highly wear resistant and can withstand temperatures to 260 degrees F, keeping oil in , and contaminants out. Engineered with low friction movement in mind, out design helps maintain tuning characteristics. In regards to valve tuning, they use sintered metal valves which is their high quality valve design and enables precise oil flow by using sintered metal valves. Tight tolerances and strength from sintered metal allow for precise tuning of compression and rebound rates that restore the original handling dynamics.
