A fuel tank cap, or gas cap, is a component that seals the opening of the vehicle’s fuel tank to prevent fuel vapors from escaping and to maintain the pressure within the fuel system. It plays a role in preventing fuel contamination, maintaining emissions control, and ensuring fuel efficiency.
Fuel Tank Cap Failure Symptoms- Check Engine Light: One of the most common signs of a faulty or loose fuel tank cap is the Check Engine Light illuminating. Common fault codes are P0455 and P0457 with verbiage highlighting the evaporative emissions system.
- Evaporative Emission Control (EVAP) System Issues: A faulty gas cap can disrupt the vehicle’s evaporative emissions control system, leading to performance issues in the system, triggering error codes, and potentially resulting in emissions test failures.
- Fuel Smell Around or in the Vehicle: If the fuel tank cap is not sealing properly or is damaged, fuel vapors may escape, causing a noticeable gasoline smell around the vehicle, especially near the fuel filler area.
