This sensor detects the Premair radiator coating on SULEV equipped cars. If the sensor is not connected or working properly to detect the black coating, many customers have reported charging issues and "Charging System Failure" error messages, as well as U028600 "Lost Communication with Radiator Anti-Tamper Switch".

Vehicles produced before week 35 in 2012 will have the old style Anti-Tamper Sensor, and Volvo has updated to a new style sensor since according to TSB TJ27910.

really weird part
First of all I have to say that the fact something like this even exists is pretty strange, but anyway. I was getting a check engine light and traced it to this sensor. Installation was also very strange. Basically you loosen the rad fan and try to get some room to squeeze in. Break the old sensor off (I did it by twisting, it was super brittle). I used a thin pick to pick out the broken tabs in the radiator, they were not difficult to remove. Then you install the new sensor upside down, because the original sensor is glued into a hole in the radiator. There is a second hole, and the sensor probe is offset...so when you turn it upside down the probe lines up with the second hole, which I guess is a provision for replacing the sensor one time before the radiator needs to be replaced. I used a little glue, made a tie for the wiring, and the CEL is gone. It feels like you have to apply a lot of force, but with a firm whack it snapped into place. Glad I didn't have to replace the whole radiator.
