Often referred to as the PNP swich, this gear position sensor is responsible for tell the Transmission Control Module which gear has been selected by grounding out 1 of four unique terminals for each gear. There also two other ground terminals that are grounded out for the Economy and sport selections. If Winter mode is selected both of these terminals are grounded at the same time.

Fixed issue
I cleaned and "resurfaced" the original PNP and it lasted about a year. Low gear and check engine flashing again, this time I decided to spend the money and purchased this replacement switch here. Looks well made, it's an exact fit, price is reasonable, and it is not too much of a hassle to install, but I'll admit that I broke a few plastics on the airbox while removing the old switch. Part went in, the transmission is back to normal function and the car is back on the road. I'm glad that FCP still offers some decent parts for my almost 30 year old Volvo. Thank FCP!

Great Price on Volvo PNP Switch
My 2000 Volvo S70 was having the eventual issue of CIL with Up Arrow warning. The PNP switch was much more affordable through FCP than the dealer and a perfect fit and solution.

This will in fact work on vehicles with Winter mode.
