Engine Crankcase Breather Hose Connector

An engine crankcase breather hose is a primary component of an engine’s positive crankcase ventilation system, funneling pressurized air from the engine crankcase to the air/oil separator, also known as the PCV valve. The PCV valve, or air/oil separator, is designed to capture and remove oil vapors from the pressurized crankcase air, allowing them to drain back to the engine, while the pressurized air is fed to the intake side of the engine and utilized as part of normal combustion.

An engine develops positive crankcase pressure as a byproduct of the overall combustion process. Because of the combination of pressure, heat, and the air/oil-vapor mixture traveling to the PCV valve, the engine crankcase breather hose is a common failure item within the PCV system and is crucial to your car’s engine’s performance and emissions compliance.

Engine Crankcase Breather Hose Connector Failure Symptoms
  • Cracks breaks, leaks: Over time, your engine crankcase breather hose can be easily damaged because of constant exposure to oil vapors, heat, and pressure from the engine. The engine oil can slowly break down the plastic or rubber materials, eventually causing an air leak. This can happen naturally, or because it is damaged from external contact.
  • Broken connectors: Plastic can become brittle over time, especially when exposed to heat and oil, and it’s easy to break one of the securing clips or connectors for a PCV hose, either during removal or during other services.
  • Broken or damaged hose: Soft rubber or brittle plastic, depending on the material of the hose, can result in an obvious hole or split in an engine crankcase breather hose, usually accompanied by one of the other faults listed below.
  • Check Engine Light: Excessive unmetered air from a failed engine crankcase breather hose can result in a CEL for an air intake leak fault or other airflow-related diagnostic trouble codes.
  • Misfire: A severe air intake leak can cause rough running and an engine misfire, a common side effect of a bad engine crankcase breather hose or PCV Valve
  • Oil residue on or around the hose or adjacent components: As engine crankcase vapors escape from a faulty engine crankcase breather hose, the hose, engine block, and adjacent components are likely to become visibly soiled with oil residue and moisture. In the most severe cases, you will smell burning or burnt oil, and you may need to degrease the area to determine the exact cause of the oil residue.

About Genuine Volvo

The original parts used by Volvo to build your car are available as replacement parts under the “Genuine Volvo” brand. Manufactured under the direction of Volvo, expect excellent quality and a premium price since these parts are exclusively available through the Volvo Dealership network.

You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your Volvo are not necessarily manufactured by Volvo. No cause for concern, as Volvo designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for Volvo for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine Volvo parts box and find an OEM branded part inside, simply with the addition of a Volvo logo.

Be sure to keep an eye out for OE tags on our product pages to quickly identify parts coming direct from OE manufacturers. That extra bit of insight could save you some serious money while shopping! Refer to our OE Academy for further information regarding the OE/OEM tags throughout the site.

Will not fit early P2 XC70's!
If you are here from the P2 PCV video, this was not compatible with my 01 XC70 and probably isn't until the 2004 model from what I can tell. Cant speak for the S60 from that year, but just a heads up. A return is easy enough so maybe just try if you aren't sure, but buy the full hose assembly as well or be prepared to not replace it (as I did). Hope this helps someone

Fits P2 also
Like others, I got this as recommended in FCP's video, for use in my 07 V70 2.5T. Great way to save some money. 2 things that applied to me, and may help you - the recommended clamps 978171 (18.5mm) do work, but they are rather large for this. I had some 17.5mm that I preferred to use (978170 is either 17 or 17.5, which works). Second, the hose from the thermostat housing, at first I had it pushed all the way up to the body where the banjo bolt goes through. I struggled to get the bolt into the intake manifold for 20 minutes or so. Then I took the clamp off and moved the hose down about 1/2", still plenty of engagement, and installed a new clamp. And then immediately, I got the bolt in. Hope this helps someone.

It was time
Just completed oil trap replacement at 200k miles and since I had the intake manifold off, I decided to make like new again. Good to go another 200k!

Have this on hand or you'll regret it.
This hose will fit the P2 xc70 as well as claimed in FCP's DIY video. When I cut back the jacket on this hose, I found it in 3 pieces along with the nipple itself being clogged. What prompted me to do the PCV job was the mileage on my car (161k) and the fact that the hose going from the thermostat to the PCV nipple was causing a minor coolant leak due to what I assumed was the nipple being clogged (and I was right).

For my 2.5T
Got it as part of the PCV system maintenance for my 260 2.5T. Thanks to FCPs video I didnt have to shell out 200+ for the whole coolant hose. The plastic hose being a tad longer actually makes it much easier to reinstall the banjo bolt back into the intake after servicing the PCV.

also works on the p2 5 cylinder engines
I ordered this to replace my pcv nipple that broke when replacing my pcv system. I found this nipple by itself for the 6 cylinder engines but it is close enough in size to work in the inline 5. Installation was straight forward, fit was a little long but not a problem. I will buy here again on my next pcv job

volvo vac line
mine was cut with a silicon hose put in-between (bought my s60 used) and the port was clogged just like in the video. glad I got it as a just incase as this is a chore to get to...if your doing this PCV job and not sure you need it ...your going to need it. worked for me and was up and running as if I didnt get this my car would be DOWN a week or more till I could get 1 and to put 1 in . ez install and I used a zip tie to secure it.

Can be used on XC90 2.5T to save some money
Used on an XC90 2.5T. On that car, the listing is for a larger assembly that includes other hoses. But somewhere on youtube is the tip that you can use this part number. On my car, just the thin plastic straw part was broken, so this was perfect to replace that part during my PVC service of replacing the oil trap. Saves a lot of $.
