An exhaust muffler is a component in a vehicle’s exhaust system designed to reduce engine noise and direct exhaust gases safely out of the tailpipe. It contains chambers, baffles, or perforated tubes that dissipate sound waves while allowing exhaust flow.
Exhaust Muffler Failure Symptoms- Loud or unusual exhaust noise – Rust holes, cracks, or internal damage causing reduced sound dampening.
- Visible rust or holes – Corrosion from moisture, road salt, or age.
- Exhaust fumes inside the vehicle – Leaks allowing gases to escape before the tailpipe.

4 years old and disappointed now - parking sensor warning, went to check and bumper cover (and presumably sensors and/or wiring insulation) getting melted thanks to tailpipe falling off. Inlet pipe doesn't look great either, local shop says too far gone to weld.
Quality of the part seems good. I wish that this had the chrome tip welded on like the Volvo part, but that costs a lot more. As someone else noted, the clamp that FCP tells you to get is not the right size. This needs a 64mm clamp. I used an old school 2.5" U-clamp that I had lying around. Not the perfect seal, but it gets the job done, until I can find something better.
This was installed on a 2004 V70 in 2014. In 2021 at 241,100 miles the weld at the connecting pipe rusted and broke. The installation was part of a complete exhaust job. I could not detect any difference vs. the original Volvo muffler The car has been used mostly for short trips in the last four years. Really not much of an opportunity to get hot and burn the water vapors. I order a replacement under the "lifetime warranty". FCP replaced it with a Volvo muffler since the Starla was not available. Easy install and the out of pocket cost was $34 for the return of the Starla by UPS. They stand-by the warranty.
Fits great, sounds like OE. Only time will tell if it holds up; mine had been replaced by a previous owner and it was both a butcher job, and the rotted replacement muffler was a Borla, and a lot of people have trouble with those.
Took about an hour to remove the OEM muffler on my 2006 XC70 with 158K. There do not appear to be any 64MM clamps in the USA so I purchase an EVIL ENERGY 2.5 2 1/2" Exhaust Band Seal Clamp Muffler Pipes Connect Stainless Steel.
I cut the existing pipe 1.75 inches from the front of the muffler after marking with a sharpie. I used a Sawzall to cut the pipe. I suggest you use a new blade. The tail pipe is made of tough steel.
I unbolted the muffler hanger from the frame, removed the old parts, slid the new muffler in, re-installed the hanger and tightened the clamp.
The car is as quiet as new.
