Direct Ignition Coil Kit

An ignition coil is a vital car component that produces high-voltage electricity to generate a spark at the spark plug, igniting the air-fuel mixture within the engine cylinder. When an ignition coil fails, it can cause engine misfires, rough idling, reduced power, an illuminated check engine light, difficulty starting the engine, and sometimes backfiring. These issues arise from weak or inconsistent sparks produced by the malfunctioning coil.

Direct Ignition Coil Kit Failure Symptoms

Engine misfires: The most prominent sign, causing the engine to jerk or shudder, especially when accelerating, due to inconsistent combustion in one or more cylinders
Rough idling: The engine vibrates or shakes noticeably when idling due to uneven firing of cylinders
Decreased engine power: The car may feel sluggish or lack acceleration due to incomplete combustion

Dramatic improvement over Hitachi coils

My 2010 6 cyl. XC70 runs fantastic now. I will say that it is critical to get top quality coils. Many coils are available that " work". But, few will work correctly/ optimally in all Volvos. The temperature at the top of Volvo engines runs quite hot (+400 degrees F). Lesser quality coils can and will get cooked quickly causing mis-fires, poor fuel economy, check engine lights, damage to catalytic converter and other problems. Also, inferior coils do not run in the precise ranges required to be compatible with the Volvo on board diagnostics. After installing these, my 3.2 6 cyl xc 70 runs much better than I hoped for. FCP EURO does a great job in providing the proper parts. I have never been disappointed with any parts I have purchased here. FCP proves again and again that we can buy top quality parts without paying double or tripple from the dealership.

VOLVO COILS

These coils worked fantastic, fixed a misfire issue. The coils on these Volvos last 100-150K miles, after that you really want to change them for piece of mind! I had 2 that had blown apart externally. Highly recommend!

My spark plug fuse was blowing every time I cranked or even turned on the car, and replacing the ignition solved the problem right away. Suggest replacing coils and definitely check the spark plug fuse under the hood if your XC90 won't turn over.

coil packs' lifespan shortened when engine running hot

I bought a used 2013 Volvo XC70 from a dealer. It took me about 6 months to detect that the engine coolant was running 5-10C hotter than the nominal 88-90C. (The dashboard does not have an engine temp. gauge). What got my attention was I noticed the radiator fins were smashed flat blocking about 50% of the airflow -- that got me to hook up a scanner and detect the engine running hot. I opened up the smashed-flat fins, and that corrected the engine temp. I didn't know how long this 5-year-old Volvo had been running hot, but guessed that the original owner (Montana) decided to trade it in because of a boilover in the summer. The dealer put in a new water pump, implying that they overlooked the radiator. I got the radiator straightened out before the car's first hot summer in CA. About a year after fixing that, there were a couple of misfire incidents, one where the engine ran choppy like 5/6 cylinders firing. It was at 115,000 mi., and about time for new spark plugs and coil packs. They went in very easy. I've since learned that coil-packs suffer from reduced lifespan when subjected to prolonged engine running hot -- mine had been stressed at least 6 months. These coil-packs are a big investment -- it pays to deal with engine overheating at the first hint of trouble. If your model doesn't have a temp. gauge, always check it out via OBD-II scan when inspecting a used car. I'll be rechecking coolant temp. once a year.

Just replace them all!

I had one failed ignition coil and was in the fence about replacing them all. Glad I did! Instant engine improvement. Smoother idle, better fuel economy, snappier throttle response. Perfect fit, quality parts.

At 180,000 miles, is it safe to say the coil packs should be changed in my 2013 xc90 R-Design? Just changed the spark plugs (they were clean, no oil) and not experiencing any major issues other than a random p0420 occasionally. Currently 21mpg highway running on 93.

Well, there are 2 schools of thought here. Of course, preventative maintenance is never a bad idea. Alternatively, some people prefer not to change coils until they fail. Personally, I am a fan of preventative maintenance.
