Hood Latch

A hood latch is the mechanical locking device that secures a vehicle’s hood in the closed position. It typically consists of a latch mechanism mounted on the vehicle frame, a striker on the hood, and a release system operated by a cable from inside the cabin. Many vehicles also use a secondary safety catch to prevent the hood from flying open if the primary latch fails. Over time, dirt, rust, and wear can cause the latch to malfunction.

Hood Latch Failure Symptoms
  • Hood not closing or staying latched – hood bounces or pops open after closing.
  • Difficulty opening the hood – release handle or cable feels stuck, loose, or unresponsive.
  • Visible damage or corrosion – rust, misalignment, or broken components around the latch mechanism.
