Liftgate supports, or gas struts, are pressurized cylinders designed to hold up a liftgate or rear hatch. Over time, they can fail due to a pressure drop, often caused by exposure to extreme temperatures, dust, or contaminants. Cold weather, in particular, can reduce the gas pressure inside the struts, making them less effective at supporting the gate during cooler conditions.
Liftgate Lift Support Failure Symptoms- The hatch may feel heavier or fail to stay open as high as before due to a gas leak in the lift support
- Grease or oil leaking from the existing shocks
- Seeping noise or creaks coming from the shocks when lifting the hatch

Note: my car is a 2011 XC70 with the electric lift gate, VIN -104554 on. Unlike the fitment description here, this car has part 31217640 on the LEFT side and 31335795 on both the LEFT and RIGHT.
Although this is "a" correct part for fixing a rear hatch that drops down, please be aware:
- On our 2014 XC70, with a power liftgate, the rear hatch is supported with (2) different supports.
- The 31217640 is for the "right" or passenger side only.
- For the "left" or drivers side, part # 31335795 is needed.
This may be different on a non-powered liftgate.
With a powered liftgate, on a 2013ish and newer XC70, the hatch is moved to position with a electric actuator, not a hydraulic unit like on the Pre 2013 cars. The electric actuator can be programmed to open fully, or to a reduced height (for limited space garages).
The issue is that the electric actuator opens the liftgate, and then does not hold it in position. This is up to the two lift supports to hold its position.
In our case, the hatch would open fully, and then the motor would shut off (because it had done it's job), and then suddenly the liftgate would drop 6-9 inches.
I "assumed" that it would require 2 new supports of the same part number. Nope, I massive support with a big spring on the right, and one "normal" looking gas-spring looking support on the left.
