Aside from an accident, there is little reason to change your fog light assemblies, although some owners experience cloudy lights due to oxidation. In the case of oxidation, there are several products on the market that remove the oxidation similarly to removing oxidation from car paint. Additionally there are some who have successfully used toothpaste to remove headlight oxidation as well (yes, you read that right). If you need new fog lights you may want to consider changing them in pairs (including the bulbs) for even lighting performance.

Fog Light Assembly

A fog light assembly is a complete lighting unit mounted low on a vehicle’s front bumper or grille, designed to improve visibility in fog, heavy rain, or snow. It typically includes the housing, lens, reflector, bulb (or LED unit), and mounting brackets. Positioned close to the ground, fog lights cast a wide, short beam that cuts through fog and reduces glare compared to regular headlights.

Fog Light Assembly Failure Symptoms
  • Dim, flickering, or non-functional fog lights, often due to burned-out bulbs, wiring issues, or water intrusion.
  • Condensation or water inside the lens, caused by a cracked housing or worn seals.
  • Physical damage to the lens or housing, affecting beam quality and alignment.
