Although your vehicle's suspension relies heavily on the the various links, arms, bushings, and joints that make up the average suspension system, it is also equally important to inspect and replace the miscellaneous hardware in the suspension. Many cars will use key bolts, washer and nuts, to attach these arms and adjust alignment features like camber and toe. Some makes will incorporate cammed bolts and washers that position the link or arm in the suspension closer to, or further from, the chassis thus altering alignment settings. It is also equally important to make sure you are using the correct hardware attributed to your vehicle's suspension and understand when and why certain components are to be used.
Suspension Control Arm Bolt Failure SymptomsAs this hardware has such an impact on the suspension and the alignment parameters, they are commonly misdiagnosed as being a faulty part as opposed to faulty hardware. Below are things to look for for diagnosing faulty suspension hardware:
- Poor handling after suspension work or overhaul, and the inability to hold alignment settings
- Uneven tire wear, even after being properly aligned
- Excessive suspension noise
- Loose links and arms in the suspension

This is for the front bushing of the LEFT control arm. This has a 3mm thick and 30mm wide washer.
Some Volvo models have different length control arm bolts for each side. This is the shorter bolt (M12 x 105mm) for S60, S80, V70 & XC70; use this bolt on the LEFT side control arm. I think XC90 models don't use this bolt.
If you plan to replace your front control arms, it's probably a good idea to replace the hardware such as these bolts!
