Engine Cooling Fan Clutch

An engine cooling fan clutch is a thermostatic device that controls the operation of the engine’s cooling fan based on temperature. It engages or disengages the fan depending on engine heat and air conditioning demand, reducing unnecessary drag on the engine when full cooling isn’t required. This helps improve fuel efficiency, reduce noise, and maintain proper engine temperature.

Engine Cooling Fan Clutch Failure Symptoms
  • Engine overheating, if the clutch fails to engage the fan when extra cooling is needed.
  • Excessive fan noise (“roaring” sound), if the clutch is stuck engaged and the fan runs at full speed all the time.

Beat the Heat
Works well. Along with a new low-temp thermostat, on a hot day I can idle in a Taco Bell drive-through for upwards of 30 minutes before the temp starts to rise. Can't wait to try it out on a traffic jam.

Perfect replacement
Installed this on my 1986 Volvo 745 Turbo (160K miles) to replace the original fan-clutch. The original no longer "free wheeled" at low rpms so there was a lot of fan noise. This solved the problem and the car is as quiet now as it was 35 years ago.

Sub tropic clutch fan
It works a little better then the standard clutch fan but still doesn't come on soon enough..It is hard to even see much of a difference sometimes..Here in Charlotte North Carolina it gets hot in summer and they really need to make a sub, sub tropic clutch fan...I have replaced everything on the cooling system hoping something would help cool this engine down in summer and the sub tropic fan still needs some tweaking..It simply needs to come on sooner..I'm starting to wonder if when I ordered the sub tropic clutch fan if they didn't just send a regular one..?

Cold Climate Use
Bought this for use in the Northeast US, in Western NY and have had no issues even through the winter - originally bought it because it was the only one FCP carried when I bought it, but it's served me well through winter and summer so far and it's far better than my last (seized) fan clutch.
