Engine Water Pump

Your vehicles engine water pump is responsible for keeping coolant flowing through the engine. As water pumps get old the internal bearing can go bad causing noise and a coolant leak. A good indicator that your water pump is failing is if you see coolant leaking through the water pump "weep hole".

This is indeed the same water pump that the dealer sells. You can even see where "Volvo" has been ground off the casting. The dealer's comes in a larger box, though, where the gasket can lie flat vs. being bent (or in my case, creased). Also the dealer's gasket comes in a plastic sleeve for protection. It also includes the 7 bolts you need to be sure to buy separately with this model. Why not a "5"? The one I bought 18 months ago for my 960 sealed fine and was a "5". This one leaked -- apparently not the creased gasket because I bought one from the dealer and that didn't fix the leak either. I cleaned the mating surface meticulously so my only conclusion is the pump's housing must have been slightly warped. I had to resort to buying the dealer's kit at double the price. I've awarding an average of a "5" and "1". Mark in Virginia [1998 S90 (x2); 1995 960; 1998 S70]
