Engine Oil Separator

The engine crankcase vent valve, also referred to as the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve, is part of a vehicle’s emission control system. It helps manage the pressure inside the engine’s crankcase by allowing gases that build up in the crankcase to be vented back into the intake manifold. These gases are then burned in the combustion process, reducing harmful emissions. The PCV valve also prevents oil contamination and helps maintain proper engine performance by controlling the amount of blow-by gases (unburned fuel and air mixture) escaping from the combustion chamber.

Engine Oil Separator Failure Symptoms
  • Rough Idle or Engine Misfire: A faulty or clogged PCV valve can cause the air-fuel mixture in the engine to become unbalanced, leading to rough idling or even engine misfires, especially when the car is idling.
  • Oil Consumption: A faulty vent valve can cause pressure to build up inside the crankcase, which may push oil out through seals or gaskets, resulting in oil leaks. Excessive pressure can also force oil into the intake manifold, leading to increased oil consumption.
  • Sludge Buildup: If the valve is stuck closed or blocked, the blow-by gases can’t escape the crankcase properly. This can cause condensation and oil to mix, forming sludge inside the engine. This sludge can block oil passages, leading to lubrication issues and engine damage over time.

About Genuine Volvo

The original parts used by Volvo to build your car are available as replacement parts under the “Genuine Volvo” brand. Manufactured under the direction of Volvo, expect excellent quality and a premium price since these parts are exclusively available through the Volvo Dealership network.

You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your Volvo are not necessarily manufactured by Volvo. No cause for concern, as Volvo designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for Volvo for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine Volvo parts box and find an OEM branded part inside, simply with the addition of a Volvo logo.

Be sure to keep an eye out for OE tags on our product pages to quickly identify parts coming direct from OE manufacturers. That extra bit of insight could save you some serious money while shopping! Refer to our OE Academy for further information regarding the OE/OEM tags throughout the site.

Good part for keeping non-turbo P2 Volvos on the road
This part with an integrated diaphragm is more complicated and more expensive compared to the turbo oil separator. Make sure to replace the other rubber components at the same time.

Always Go OEM For PCV Components
Always go OEM when it comes to PCV components, or any engine parts, for that matter! Decided to finally work on my PCV system done after exactly 197,123 miles, and almost 15 years on this PCV system. Yes; you read that right. Most people only get a small fraction of that mileage out of their PCV systems---it is an often neglected part of automotive maintenance, and can possibly lead to catastrophic engine damage. Story Time: The last time the PCV was done on my S60 was by Volvo under warranty with the original owners in March 2004, so all the parts were Volvo OEM, needless to say; She was approaching 3 years of age, and only had 64,794 miles---261,917 miles when the new PCV was installed. However, considering the circumstances, the old system was in INCREDIBLE condition! The oil trap looked great, and was NO heavier than the new one; the hoses were still very pliable, appeared to have no cracks, and there was VERY little sludge, and this is proof that my S60 was (and is still) LOVED! Now, I have slightly better fuel economy, and better idle after installing the new PCV components probably because there was a minor vacuum leak in the old oil trap. However, since the rest of the PCV was in great shape, there was absolutely no crankcase pressure (constant, CONSTANT glove/dipstick tests). And that is why you go OEM with PCV components; because, as long as you change your oil within reasonable intervals and keep up with maintenance, your PCV will last nearly FOREVER!
