The CV (Constant Velocity) axle assembly is responsible for transferring torque and rotational power from the transmission to the wheels while allowing for suspension movement and steering articulation. The CV axle consists of a shaft with joints at both ends: a CV joint that connects the axle to the transmission and another CV joint that connects the axle to the wheel hub. This design allows the axle to handle changes in angle and length as the vehicle moves, especially when turning or going over bumps.
CV Axle Assembly Failure Symptoms- Clicking or Popping Noises: One of the most common signs of a failing CV axle is a clicking or popping noise when turning the vehicle. This noise typically occurs when the CV joint is damaged or worn out, especially during sharp turns.
- Vibration While Driving: A failing CV axle can cause noticeable vibrations while driving, especially at higher speeds. This vibration may indicate that the axle is bent, or damaged, or that the CV joints are worn out.
- Grease Leaks: If the CV axle boot tears or cracks, grease can leak out. You may notice grease on the inside of the wheel or around the CV joint. This can lead to increased wear on the joint due to a lack of lubrication.

I made the horrible mistake of buying cheap axles from under a rock if you know what I mean... Boy was that a mistake, the axle from the rock place was garbage and two failed back to back... I ended up having to taking the transmission out of the car to clean the shrapnel of the chewed up inner splines out of the case. For the life of me, I could have never imagined this failure happening. Third time is a charm! This time I ordered the GKN Axle from FCP Euro and it is working great without any indication of suffering the failure of the previous cheap axles. FCP Euro has been a wonderful resource!!! From reputable advice on their webpage and YouTube channel, to curated quality parts! You can't go wrong with FCP. Thanks guys. Now that my car is sorted out with new axles, single mass flywheel, and clutch, I am eager to sort out the suspension too. Keep an eye out for my order soon. I just cant decide if I should I go with the Bilstein Pro-Kit or the BC Racing Coilovers... Choices, choices.

This would only be for FWD, the M66 AWD transmissions would use 36000556 for S40/V50.

Is the intermediate shaft bearing fixed in place by tack weld or is it pressed into place? Bought a different axel from another webpage and it failed TWICE by the bearing walking down the axel. Mortified at the thought of taking the transmission apart to clean spline shrapnel out of it again. Hoping that this is not a failure point you have observed for these axels as well.

The bearing is press fit. GKN is the OE manufacturer and re-builder for Volvo, trusted by their dealerships to be Genuine Quality (Genuine Axles are rebuilt by GKN). This axle will not fail like the axles sold by some other online sites. Those aftermarket units are not worth the risk, as you can see.
