Coil Spring

A suspension coil spring is designed to support the weight of a vehicle and ensure that it rides and handles with an appropriate amount of ride height and weight transfer and control, and is an integral part of the overall suspension system, which typically includes shock absorbers/struts, and anti-roll bars. As part of a total system, the coil spring is designed to support and control the vehicle’s weight at each corner, while the damper (shock absorber or strut) controls the energy of that spring as the weight acts on it, compressing and releasing energy in the spring.

Suspension coil springs are usually made of high-grade unalloyed or steel alloys.

Coil Spring Failure Symptoms
  • Loss of rate - As the car is driven and the coil spring is cycled and compressed, the spring material will lose rate and tension, softening from its original specification
  • Breaking/cracking - Coil springs can fatigue to the point that they break or fail. This can happen at the front or rear, of any type of vehicle
  • Cracked or flaking paint coating - Most coil springs are painted or powder coated for durability and rust resistance. Over time this can begin to crack and flake, off, allowing the spring material to corrode
  • Sagging or uneven ride height - As a spring loses rate it can cause a loss of ride height, usually referred to as sagging springs. This can happen on any one corner but often seems to happen most often in the rear. A broken spring can also cause uneven ride height
  • Clunks, clanks, and other noises over bumps - A broken spring can cause various noises over different types of bumps and at different speeds. This could be from the spring itself, or other components making contact where they should not be
  • Rough ride, poor handling, lack of suspension support, or firmness - Once a coil spring loses enough spring rate, in addition to the above issues, you may notice a general lack of handling performance or the car may feel dull and not responsive. Additionally, you may notice a rougher-than-normal ride because the car will be ‘on the bump stops’ hitting potholes and large bumps.

Good stuff
Needed to buy new front and rear springs to bring my 245 back to factory height. Got both sets of these springs, and they look and work great.

Excellent Replacement for Old, Sagging OEM Springs
'90 240 Wagon fitment. With 10mm spacers on the rear wheels, we'd occasionally rub over bigger dips in the road. After replacing the original, 32 year old springs with these, the tires not only no longer rubbed, but the car seemed more planted and poised in overall driving, and the ride height was evened-out. Highly recommended.

Lesjofors 1229052
These were excellent - so nice they could have easily been framed. They were zinc plated and coated with an epoxy paint, and they looked it. They looked even better than OEM. And the ride was the exact same as before with the old springs - nothing fancy. The ride leaving the mechanic felt as if I had just bought a brand new car. After 422K miles on a 1990 245, the factory springs finally wore out. This was a turnkey replacement.

Questions & Answers

Ask a question
Question Posted by a customer
In the FAQs, one answer says these are not stiffer than stock, and the other says that they are. Can you confirm if these are stiffer than OEM, by how much (%), and what the wire thickness is?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
We do not have a confirmed spring-rate percentage or wire-thickness specification for this Lesjöfors spring. It is an OE-style replacement spring, so it should be considered equivalent to the correct factory spring for the listed applications, not an advertised heavy-duty or upgraded/stiffer spring.
Question Posted by John
Would these be sufficient for heavier loads or towing? How do they compare to other “overload springs”?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
These are OEM springs so they would mirror the stock springs of the vehicles listed on the fitment tab.
Question Posted by a customer
Is this spring a softer ride than genuine spring? Or is it stiff? Thank you.
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
These are designed with original OE specs, so not too soft and not too stiff. Keep in mind you will be comparing with aged sagging, worn out, most likely weaker springs if the ones in your vehicle are original.
Question Posted by a customer
Hi, what is the standing height of the spring?Thank you
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
This stands 16" tall
Question Posted by a customer
What's the difference between Lesjofors 1229052, 1212426, & 1212427? Thanks.
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
1229052 this is a 14mm spring 1212426 this is a 12mm spring 1212427 this is a 13mm spring
Question Posted by a customer
Is this price per spring or per pair?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
The springs are sold individually, the price is for one spring.
