Engine Camshaft Seal

A camshaft seal is a rubber or silicone ring located on the top of the cylinder head near the back of the engine, designed to prevent engine oil from leaking out; a failing camshaft seal will most noticeably manifest as visible oil leaks around the back of the engine, sometimes accompanied by smoke from the engine bay when the leaking oil comes into contact with hot exhaust components

Engine Camshaft Seal Failure Symptoms
  • Visible oil leaks: The most obvious sign, usually seen on the back of the engine near the valve cover.
  • Smoke from the engine bay: Oil leaking onto hot exhaust manifolds can burn off, producing smoke.
  • Oil residue on the engine: Even small leaks can leave noticeable oil stains on the engine.

Worked Perfectly
Used this successfully on my 2001 Volvo V70 2.4 base non-turbo. It has the VVT on the intake, but the exhaust is a standard cam. This tool made installation of the front cam seal a fool-proof event. There isn't much clearance with the strut tower in the way, so this makes applying even pressure to the seal very easy. I even marked the tool against a mark I put on the head to allow me to keep the cam in the original position (did the job without the cams locked). With all the work done to get to the seal, I felt better knowing I wouldn't have to do it a second time. Just be patient, do the research, and you'll be fine!

Takes the guess work out of seating the seal
Do yourself a favor and get this tool. This job is too involved to get it wrong.

This tool does NOT fit the 05 Volvo V50 T5, even though it is said to. Call your Volvo dealer or do online research to find out if the 9995719 or 9995718 is the proper tool for your cam shafts.
