Product Information

Some models may have different wiring for the VVT solenoid. Volvo has superseded that solenoid to a different style, and introduced this kit as a solution in case the wiring connector on the vehicle's harness is a different design. Simply insert the pins into connector to make a pigtail, and use the included splices to connect the wires to the harness.

The VVT solenoid controls oil pressure to the VVT adjuster located on the intake camshaft gear on many 5 and 6 cylinder Volvo Whiteblock engines. When it goes bad, the VVT adjusters will struggle to correctly adjust the camshaft angle, which will trigger a camshaft correlation code. Most commonly you will encounter a P0026 - Intake Valve Control Solenoid Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1). You will also detect sluggish performance from the engine as the ECU will not be able to control the camshaft angles. For code P0027 - Exhaust Valve Control Solenoid Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1), take a look at the exhaust side [HERE]. Not all engines have both intake and exhaust VVT.

Other things to check when you get these DTC codes are the VVT cam gears. They should be dry, and have no play. If they are leaking, more likely the issue is with the gear. If the gears are in good shape then finally, the camshaft position sensor is a common failure item and should be checked. Pay special attention to the condition of the electrical plug.

This Genuine Volvo VVT solenoid comes with a new gasket.

About Genuine Volvo

The original parts used by Volvo to build your car are available as replacement parts under the “Genuine Volvo” brand. Manufactured under the direction of Volvo, expect excellent quality and a premium price since these parts are exclusively available through the Volvo Dealership network.

You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your Volvo are not necessarily manufactured by Volvo. No cause for concern, as Volvo designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for Volvo for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine Volvo parts box and find an OEM branded part inside, simply with the addition of a Volvo logo.

Be sure to keep an eye out for OE tags on our product pages to quickly identify parts coming direct from OE manufacturers. That extra bit of insight could save you some serious money while shopping! Refer to our OE Academy for further information regarding the OE/OEM tags throughout the site.

Disassemble plug to connect wires
This removed the P1671 and P1672 codes on my 2000 V70. It did not stop the cylinder 1 misfires at idle or lack of power. You must disassemble the black plug to properly insert the pins. Lift a latch to slide out the insert then pull down the green end piece to remove it. The square holes in the inner black plug are what the tabs on the female connector ends snap in to so insert them correctly. Reassemble the connector and you'll have a water tight seal which won't allow the pins to push out. Take care when stripping the wires on the car because they are brittle from engine heat. Minus one star for the change of plug making this a much harder job.

Fixed P0300 code in 2001 V70
I chased a rough idle that would randomly occur on myP2 V70 for several years. Took the car to the Volvo dealer twice and they couldn't get the car to idle rough or exhibit any problems. Eventually the car threw a P0300 code for random misfire and the idle became much more consistently unstable. The easy check to verify that the solenoid was bad was to simply unplug it and see how the drivability and idle responding to a non-functional VVT solenoid. All of the idle concerns stopped the second the solenoid was unplugged.
