Engine Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Solenoid

An Engine Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Solenoid is an essential component of an engine's variable valve timing system. It controls the flow of oil to the VVT system, which adjusts the timing of the opening and closing of the engine's intake and exhaust valves. This adjustment allows for optimal engine performance, improved fuel efficiency, and reduced emissions by enabling the engine to operate more efficiently across different RPM ranges.

Engine Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Solenoid Failure Symptoms
  • Check Engine Light: A malfunctioning VVT solenoid often triggers the Check Engine light. Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the VVT system may be stored in the vehicle's onboard diagnostics, indicating an issue with the solenoid or related components
  • Poor Engine Performance: If the VVT solenoid is failing, it can cause the engine to experience poor acceleration, hesitation, or overall reduced power. This is often due to incorrect valve timing affecting the engine's ability to breathe properly
  • Rough Idling: A faulty VVT solenoid can result in unstable or rough idling, as the engine may struggle to maintain a consistent RPM due to improper valve timing adjustments

It's not exactly as shown in the catalog
The item was purchased to address a P0315 code on a 2001 Volvo S40. Though the item in the photo looks exactly like the factory part, the item that was shipped (Febi) has some of the embossed lettering ground off. Still, it fit and works fine (though it didn't eliminate my P0315 code).

Perfect
After I did a huge head gasket replacement repair this part started to leak a bit of oil on to the exhaust manifold from under its sealing surface. At first I thought it had a bad gasket, but it still leaked oil with a new one installed. I figured it must have gotten warped from the extreme heat when I overheated my engine a while back causing the head gasket failure I described above. This brand new solenoid fit perfect, fixed my leak, and now I don't have to worry about it failing for the rest of the life of the car since it is brand new. Genuine Volvo quality.

Questions & Answers

Ask a question
Question Posted by Juan
I have a P0015 code. Will changing this solenoid clear it? 2002 V40 with 148k miles.
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Maybe, but most likely not. It is possible your VVT is not functioning properly, either due to a failed camshaft adjuster pulley or loss of oil pressure somewhere in the system due to sludge. It would be wise to make sure the car doesn't have low oil pressure due to sludge, or clogged oil passageways in the solenoid, then check the condition of the VVT pulley. With the timing belt tension off it should have little to no play.
Question Posted by a customer
can a variable valve timing failure cause "camshaft seal blow out" on an early model 2000 s40 if not what are other possible causes for the condition stated
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Not very likely unless you've had a catastrophic failure of some kind. More likely is that you have some excess crank case pressure built up due to aging PCV components, compounded with an old seal. You can gauge how much crank pressure you have by running the engine with no oil cap on. If you feel air blowing out, then you have excess pressure blow-by and need to look into replacing your PCV. Here is the kit for your car. Take note of the engine split. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-pcv-breather-system-kit-v40-s40-s40pcvkit1
