This vacuum switch controls vacuum created from the vacuum pump to the power brake booster. The plastic can become brittle over time, and this switch is a common source for cracks and vacuum leaks, which will cause poor engine and brake performance simultaneously.

Great repair product for a stuck on vacuum pump
My vacuum pump was running continuously. I'd notice it when I'd pull into a parking spot somewhere and walk around the engine bay. When I opened the hood I took my cell phone out and shot a video wandering around the engine in a few spots and played back the video. You can hear how loud the sound gets when the phone neared the vacuum pump. You can also touch the metal top plate of the vacuum pump and it will be blazing hot to the touch. I bought this switch and swapped it out with the old one and ever since the vacuum pump has never been stock on again. For a while I'd park and shut off the engine and that would seem to reset the switch when I started the engine up again. I bought a new vacuum pump just in case at the same time but I haven't needed it and now it's just a spare in my box of parts since replacing the switch fixed everything that was off.
