An automatic transmission oil cooler is a heat exchanger that helps regulate the temperature of transmission fluid. It works by circulating the hot transmission fluid through a cooler (often located in front of the radiator or as part of it), where air or coolant lowers the fluid temperature before it returns to the transmission. Keeping transmission fluid cool is essential for preventing overheating, reducing wear, and extending the lifespan of the transmission.

• Overheating transmission – warning lights, slipping gears, or loss of power due to fluid running too hot.
• Fluid leaks – puddles or wet spots under the vehicle near the cooler or cooler lines.
• Contaminated fluid – coolant mixing with transmission fluid (milky appearance) or debris in the fluid leading to shifting problems.
