A Secondary Air Injection Pump is part of a vehicle’s emissions control system. Its main purpose is to inject fresh air into the exhaust stream during cold starts. This extra oxygen helps the catalytic converter heat up faster and burn off excess fuel, reducing harmful emissions before the engine reaches operating temperature. The pump is usually electric or belt-driven and works only for a short time after startup.

• Check Engine Light (CEL) illuminated, often with fault codes (such as P0410, P0411, or related to “secondary air system”).
• Rough idle or hesitation on cold starts due to improper air-fuel mixture before the catalytic converter stabilizes.
• Failed emissions test or increased exhaust smell, as the system cannot reduce pollutants effectively during startup.
