Product Information

Goes from air mass meter to the intake manifold. This hose includes the elbow

Hose/lines can become brittle over time leading to leakage, or worse yet complete failure. Be sure to make it part of your oil change routine to check the condition of hoses, belts and fluids as part of preventative maintenance.

Engine Air Intake Hose

The engine air intake hose channels clean outside air through the air filter and into the intake manifold. Depending on whether your engine is naturally aspirated or turbocharged, these hoses are typically made from flexible plastic or rubber, which can degrade over time. Maintaining a clean and sealed air intake system is essential for proper combustion of the air/fuel mixture. A damaged or failing air intake hose can lead to reduced fuel efficiency, compromised engine performance, and improper fuel mixture, potentially causing damage to the engine.

Engine Air Intake Hose Failure Symptoms
  • Check engine light: The check engine light may come on and stay on, indicating a lean condition
  • Rough idle: The engine may run rough at idle and under load
  • Intake noises: Additional intake noises may be heard during acceleration as air rushes in between cracks on a broken intake hose
  • Poor fuel economy: If there is not enough air, the engine will demand more fuel to compensate, leading to poor fuel economy

About Genuine Volvo

The original parts used by Volvo to build your car are available as replacement parts under the “Genuine Volvo” brand. Manufactured under the direction of Volvo, expect excellent quality and a premium price since these parts are exclusively available through the Volvo Dealership network.

You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your Volvo are not necessarily manufactured by Volvo. No cause for concern, as Volvo designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for Volvo for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine Volvo parts box and find an OEM branded part inside, simply with the addition of a Volvo logo.

Be sure to keep an eye out for OE tags on our product pages to quickly identify parts coming direct from OE manufacturers. That extra bit of insight could save you some serious money while shopping! Refer to our OE Academy for further information regarding the OE/OEM tags throughout the site.

There is a trick to this one.
Be cautious if you replace the lower elbow section as I could have left that alone and saved a lot of hassle. If you replace the whole thing, just get the flame trap plug kit for $3.50 as it is easy to lose that O-ring inside the engine compartment. You will need a 7 and 8mm socket wrench for the hose clamps as removing the clamp for the fuel injector wiring harness and unhooking the accelerator cable helped me. Separate this into two sections so you can maneuver the elbow to reattach the flame trap plug without breaking it or it falling off. Attach and lock in the flame trap to the side port on the elbow before installing the elbow on the air intake. You will need to keep the flame port from rotating and coming unlocked as you install it. Danger: If this plastic elbow is mounted on the engine air intake but NOT rotated clockwise towards the windshield after seating it, the side port (shown in the picture) has a serious risk of blocking movement of the throttle linkage. Three days later, I started driving but felt pedal resistance that prevented going faster than 30mph, so dumbass here stomped on the gas pedal to overcome the resistance then found myself stuck in an open-throttle condition. shift to neutral, pull over, and turn the engine off. Probably shouldn't ever do that. Hose clamps must be tight and not for air leaks, I believe. Get new hose clamps especially at the engine. You must make damn sure that your throttle linkage rotates freely after installing and does not get stuck on the flame trap plug because the hose to the air cleaner is almost too short and will pull on the elbow, rotating it. Fortunately, I was quick to gearshift to neutral and turn the over-revving engine off. Completely pull out the air intake box/air filter assembly for room. The whole thing just snaps in. Replace the tiny rubber elbows on the vacuum line to the secondary air system while you have it apart. Starting at the engine air intake, attach and tighten the three hose clamps while the lid of the air-cleaner box is flipped vertical. You will be able to maneuver the lid closed with the new hose firmly attached. Finally, before putting the cover over the throttle, double check the throttle rotation is completely smooth! Be safe.

Did the job!
Hard to find vacuum leak, the old one was cracked under the hose clamp where it attaches to the intake. I noticed it by accident really. The new one fits fine, looks to be the same quality as the old one and didn't fight too much going in. I went ahead and replaced the idle control valve hoses as well, they were really brittle and had a really poor grip on the ends, despite being hose clamped...Seems to have fixed the vacuum leak...Thanks FCP!

A hose that connects to the PCV!
Fits into my wife's S70, non-Turbo. I had to replace my original piece because I broke the part that connects it to PCV. Next time I do a PCV job, I will disconnect this hose before doing anything else to make sure it doesn't need replacing. I could've cleaned the original piece and then glued it with some high-temp epoxy, but it was better/easier/safer to just swap the piece. A tad pricey for a little piece of plastic, but this is Volvo we're talking about!

I needed the lower part that connects to the throttle body for our S70 na, which fit fine. But Volvo has done something different with the flexible hose. It's incredibly stiff and the upper end that connects to air box is so tight as to be under-sized. I tried some silicone spray to try to get it to slip on--also removed the top of the air box for a better angle, but couldn't make it happen. The combination of the stiffness and being too tight caused me to give up and just use my old flex hose which checked out OK and is not the original anyway. I'll save this one for when it's needed and I have some friends over to wrestle with it.

Question Posted by Yogi
There are 3 hose clamps that connect this hose to the rest of the intake system. How many clamps are included when buying this replacement part? Mine have deteriorated
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
The middle clamp pictured is included part of the hose and that keep both halves together. You will need part number 988034 and part number 966016 listed below as well. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-engine-intake-pipe-clamp-genuine-volvo-988016 https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-hose-clamp-genuine-volvo-988034
Question Posted by a customer
The side port facing us in the picture has a interocking round plug that has an O-ring on it.. At least mine did until it fell off inside the engine compartment. What is the thing with two pipes from the engine that interlocks into that side port. How do I find another O-ring that fits inside this side port?
