Volvo Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner - Genuine Volvo

One of the most commonly failed components on your Volvo's belt accessory drive it the serpentine belt tensioner's idler pulley bearing. Be sure to replace your serpentine belt tensioner as soon as you begin to hear the audible noise of bearing failure.

Why Genuine Volvo?

The original parts used by Volvo to build your car are available as replacement parts under the "Genuine Volvo" brand. Manufactured under the direction of Volvo, expect excellent quality and a premium price since these parts are exclusively available through the Volvo Dealership network.

You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your Volvo are not necessarily manufactured by Volvo.

No cause for concern, as Volvo designs the part, hires a manufacturer and ensures its quality to you, including a lifetime warranty. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for Volvo for decades and are experts in their own right. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) or OES (Original Equipment Suppliers), and are often brands you recognize including Bosch, KYB, NGK and Sachs. Don't be surprised to open that Genuine Volvo parts box and find a NGK branded part inside.

What can really be said for a tensioner? If yours is great, wonderful. When you need a new one, go with OEM every time! Make sure that you have the correct torx bit, especially if your tensioner is extremely old or not OEM. I ended up using a large hex socket because I didn't have the right torx bit. This remedied the slight chirp that I was getting from my old tensioner and was cheap insurance while I already had parts out.

Volvo quality. You need a T-60 Torx to install a new belt with this.

This Volvo part is definitely made by INA (just as shown in the photo) so I expect that the other offerings are made on the same line, just without the "Volvo" logo on the casting. For the "5" rating I forced myself to overlook the design change that eliminated the pulley bolt head as I expect this is going to apply to all offerings. A couple of important notes: 1. You need a Torx T-60 to compress this tensioner. Be sure to put it to the right of the belt even though this appears to be initially in the way. The belt fits very tightly and you have to get it just right (watch Jason's video on S60 timing belt replacement). It took awhile. 2. Don't bother pulling off the pulley's dust cap expecting access to a nomal 14mm bolt head to compress -- it's now a very shallow torx. I couldn't get enough clearance to try it, hence the T-60 on the body must be used. The old tensioner I removed had the 14mm bolt head. I don't believe the CTA tool used in Jason's video and sold by FCP will be of any use on the new version.
