When doing this job, consider replacing the A/C receiver drier at the same time. The drier is designed to keep moisture out of the system and has a set “capacity” to remove that water. AC refrigerant and water do not mix, and prolonged contact can begin to form hydrofluoric acid, damaging all components of your system. If you are investing in a new compressor, consider a new drier as well so as to be sure system moisture does not result in a premature failure of your new compressor.

Due to the high pressures and thermal load, incorrect servicing of the air conditioning system in your Volvo can cause damage and failure. FCP Euro recommends A/C system filling and servicing should be done by trained technicians using certified AC equipment for maximum efficiency.

A/C Compressor

The A/C compressor is responsible for providing the system pressure necessary to move refrigerant throughout the A/C system. Without adequate system pressure, the refrigerant will not adequately cool the air in your vehicle's cabin. An A/C system that is not blowing cold air or intermittently blowing cold air can be caused by an A/C compressor. Some simple checks that can be performed before condemning an A/C compressor are, verifying system refrigerant, verifying plausible values from all temperature and pressure sensors, and verifying command signals from the HVAC control unit.

A/C Compressor Failure Symptoms
  • No A/C clutch engagement
  • Variable displacement solenoid failure
  • Noise on engagement
  • Intermittent cooling

Excellent replacement for early P2 Volvos
This compressor wasn't an exact match for the OE compressor for look but it fit perfectly and has been working great. I tried a junkyard compressor first and it leaked the coolant - this compressor wasn't significantly more expensive than a used one and it didn't have any leak problems.

replacement for 2001 s60 ac compressor
I was skeptical at first, but I've had it in my car for around 6 months, works great and I've had no issues. Was a relatively easy replacement with the tutorials found on YouTube, and this part being essentially plug n play once you recharge your ac system.

Good Part
So this is the third time I've replaced the AC Compressor on the old S60. I bought cheap ones off eBay before, because until awhile ago, the lowest price on this old type compressor here was in the $600 range. I regret going cheap, but now I don't have too. This unit was priced in the $200's now and seems to work really well. I had my mechanic install it. He was able to pull it out from underneath after removing the intake hose and radiator fan. I checked the clutch gap on this one myself before it got installed, and it was good and tight ( around 0.35mm). The unit is working well now. I hope this is the last time I swap this thing.

This compressor was a direct replacement for my S60 and the FCP online video was helpful for the installation.

Questions & Answers

Ask a question
Question Posted by a customer
does it come pre oiled and does it come with replacement o rings?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
There is oil inside the compressor, it is not dry. O-rings are also included. To ensure longevity of the part, a correct AC service should be done, which includes flushing the system of old fluid and oil and replacing it complete. We also recommend to change the AC filter receiver drier at this time to avoid contaminating the new parts with buildup and acids.
Question Posted by a customer
How do I figure out the chasis number on my 2001 Volvo S60? I'm not sure which version of this pump I need.
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Hello, the last 6 numbers of your VIN would be the chassis number.
