Product Information

The A/C expansion valve regulates the flow of Freon plus it supports the process of Freon changing from liquid to a gas (by allowing the Freon to expand). As the Freon expands, it becomes cooler just as it enters your car's evaporator core and cools your car's interior (with the help of your interior fan). Most expansion vales fail due to clogging, causing it to stick in an open, closed or partially open position and must be replaced.

A/C Expansion Valve

An A/C expansion valve's primary function is to regulate the flow of refrigerant into the evaporator, where it absorbs heat and cools the air inside the vehicle. The expansion valve reduces the pressure of the refrigerant, allowing it to expand and cool before it enters the evaporator coils. This process is essential for efficient cooling and overall performance of the A/C system.

A/C Expansion Valve Failure Symptoms
  • Poor Cooling Performance: One of the most common symptoms of a failing expansion valve is reduced cooling efficiency. The air coming from the vents may not be as cold as expected, even when the A/C system is running
  • Frost or Ice Build-Up: If the expansion valve is stuck open, too much refrigerant may enter the evaporator, leading to excessive cooling and ice formation on the evaporator coils. This can cause airflow restrictions and further decrease cooling efficiency
