A manual transmission synchro ring (synchronizer ring) is a precision-machined brass or steel component inside a manual gearbox. Its role is to match the speed of the gear being engaged with the speed of the shaft, allowing smooth, grind-free shifting. It uses friction surfaces to “synchronize” gear speeds before the dog teeth engage.

• Gear grinding during shifts, especially when moving into 2nd or 3rd gear.
• Difficulty engaging gears, requiring extra force on the shifter.
• Gear pop-out under load, as worn synchros fail to hold the gear securely.
