Product Information

The ignition coils on Porsche 911 models are a maintenance item that should be replaced approximately every 30,000 miles. Due to their proximity to the exhaust, they will develop stress cracks from the thousands of heat cycles they experience. With the ignition coils removed it's also recommended to replace the spark plugs.

This updated ignition coil kit includes longer bolts and washers to move the valve cover heat shield back allowing clearance for the new ignition coils.

Ignition Coil Kit

An ignition coil is a vital car component that produces high-voltage electricity to generate a spark at the spark plug, igniting the air-fuel mixture within the engine cylinder. When an ignition coil fails, it can cause engine misfires, rough idling, reduced power, an illuminated check engine light, difficulty starting the engine, and sometimes backfiring. These issues arise from weak or inconsistent sparks produced by the malfunctioning coil.

Ignition Coil Kit Failure Symptoms
  • Engine misfires: The most prominent sign, causing the engine to jerk or shudder, especially when accelerating, due to inconsistent combustion in one or more cylinders
  • Rough idling: The engine vibrates or shakes noticeably when idling due to uneven firing of cylinders
  • Decreased engine power: The car may feel sluggish or lack acceleration due to incomplete combustion

Porsche Ignition Coil Kit
My 996.1 C4 was at 59k miles. Decided to replace the spark plugs and coil kits, coil kits looked quite a few years old and were an older design. Once installed this kit with updated coils which are larger, the car ran very crisp, better than before. Pleased with the difference this maintenance work made for my car.

Pretty solid kit, recommend a few minor changes
I just installed this kit today, and everything went really well. I have a few suggestions: 1) The kit should prominently feature the fact that the replacement bolts for the ignition coils use an E10 socket. This is a socket that the majority of DIY'ers don't naturally have. The E10 socket should be offered as an optional add-on. An 8mm socket head is a usable alternative, but a lot of people would prefer to have the right tool. 2) The washers used as spacers for the heat shield are not ideal. They work, but they're a big pain for installation and removal. There has to be a better way to do this. Maybe just use some silicon to temporarily 'stick' them onto the bolt?
