When removing the high pressure fuel pump inspect the camshaft plug. Often times this will be broken since it's made from plastic. It's recommended to replace this piece, 94810511400, any time the high pressure fuel pump is removed as preventative maintenance against future failure.

Direct Injection High Pressure Fuel Pump

A direct injection high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) is a critical component in modern gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines. Unlike traditional fuel pumps, it boosts fuel pressure to extremely high levels (often over 2,000 psi) so fuel can be directly injected into the combustion chamber. This enables better fuel atomization, improved efficiency, and higher power output. The HPFP is typically driven by the camshaft and works in tandem with a low-pressure fuel pump. Over time, wear, contamination, or internal failure can lead to drivability issues.

  • Engine performance problems – hard starting, hesitation, misfires, or loss of power under load.
  • Fuel-related issues – check engine light, lean/rich codes, or reduced fuel economy.
  • Noises or leaks – ticking/whining sounds from the pump or visible fuel leakage at the pump area.
