Clutch Fork Bearing

A "clutch fork bearing," also commonly called a "throwout bearing" or "clutch release bearing," is a part of the clutch system that sits on the end of the clutch fork and is responsible for pushing the clutch pressure plate away from the flywheel when the clutch pedal is depressed, allowing the clutch to disengage; a failing clutch fork bearing often manifests as unusual noises, particularly a grinding or rattling sound, when engaging or disengaging the clutch pedal, sometimes accompanied by a stiff clutch pedal or difficulty shifting gears.

Clutch Fork Bearing Failure Symptoms
  • Grinding or rattling noise when pressing the clutch pedal: This is the most common sign of a worn or damaged throwout bearing, especially when the clutch is partially engaged
  • Stiff clutch pedal: A worn bearing can cause increased friction, making the clutch pedal harder to press down
  • Clutch slippage: In severe cases, a failing bearing might not fully disengage the clutch, leading to slipping when accelerating.
