Mounted to the steering knuckle, located at the outer position
If there is play in the front suspension between the control arm and wheel spindle your ball joint will need to be replaced. This joint is a critical connection point between the wheel spindle and the lower control arm.

I bought these ball joints for my suspension refresh to keep my suspension tight and responsive. Perfect fit to replace my worn out original ball joints.
Not sure what is at fault, but on my R53 after about a week of having replaced one of the outer ball joints I heard some clunking over bumps. Upon inspecting the issue, I found one of the bolts was loose. I tried to tighten it back up to torque spec but I found the threads had been completely stripped out. Removing my old joint bolts wasn't an issue, and they were tight upon removing at the time, the threads were also not rusted. I did not reuse them as I used the supplied hardware that came with lock-tight pre installed. Also the bolts are slightly different (the heads of the bolts). I never checked the threads, but it seemed to go in fine, and as I remember it tightened up to torque spec just fine too. A mystery I may never know the answer to. I havent messed with the second bolt.
Perfect replacement at a very reasonable price for my worn out outer ball joints (2005 Mini Cooper S).
I broke the bolt on one of the OEM ball joints and decided to replace both in case there were stress fractures on the other. These were a perfect fit and I like that the mounting bolts are torx rather than hex heads since the OEM bolts were banged up and required some adjusting to fit the socket for removal.
This part is identical in form and fit to the original. Seems like exact same quality too. Went in perfectly and seems sturdy enough to last a long time.
