Harmonic balancers have a simple objective, to control engine harmonics. Without a harmonic balancer the engine will basically tear itself apart. Over time the harmonic balancer may wear out requiring replacement.

A harmonic balancer is a component of an engine that absorbs vibrations and minimizes resonance. A failing harmonic balancer can cause serious engine damage, so it's important to diagnose and repair it quickly.

Engine Harmonic Balancer Failure Symptoms
  • Engine vibration: A failing harmonic balancer can cause the engine to shake excessively, especially at high speeds
  • Knocking noise: A knocking sound from the front of the engine can be an early sign of a separating outer ring
  • Squeaking noise: A squeaking noise as the engine rotates could be a sign of a failing harmonic balancer
