Required replacement when servicing your Mini Cooper's CVT transmission

Many manufacturers stipulate a lifetime transmission fill in their vehicles. This is simply not the case. While many modern fluids have a longer service life than they used to, the reality is they still break down. Operating fluids which are exposed to heating and cooling cycles will cause the additives to deplete as well as for the viscosity to change. Transmission fluids are no exception to this rule.

Servicing your transmission every 2 years or 30,000 miles is the best way to ensure a lifetime of trouble free service as well as to ensure that the fluid in your transmission is always fresh. A simple drain and fill service is often the only requirement to achieve this.

When servicing the transmission it is important to replace the filter. The filter traps contaminants and can become clogged with wear material over time.

Transmission Oil Filter

The transmission oil filter prevents harmful particulate matter from entering the transmission valve body and damaging valve body bores, solenoids, and other fluid passages. Foreign particles in valve body bores, solenoids, or passages will cause shifting issues. Some of these issues include delayed shifts, harsh shifts, or no gear engagement in extreme cases.

Clogged filters can reduce fluid volume and flow in the transmission causing starvation of the transmission pump. This can be identified by an RPM-dependent whine from the transmission bell housing area. The transmission oil filter should be changed during any fluid service, and it is critical to replace the filter if major transmission components are replaced such as the torque converter, transmission pump, or transmission valve body.
