Product Information

  • Hood Insulation Pad for R58 Model Mini
  • Mounting Rivet Sold Separately (Part Number: 51481915964)
Hood Insulation Pad

A hood insulation pad is a layer of insulating material attached to the underside of a vehicle’s hood. Its primary functions are to reduce engine noise heard inside and outside the cabin, protect the hood’s paint from engine heat, and sometimes provide limited fire protection by slowing flame spread. Over time, the insulation pad can degrade due to heat, vibration, and exposure to fluids or contaminants.

Hood Insulation Pad Failure Symptoms
  • Noise increase – more engine noise or vibration heard in the cabin or outside.
  • Heat damage – hood paint fading, discoloration, or warping from excess engine heat.
  • Physical deterioration – sagging, tearing, missing sections, or contamination from oil/coolant leaks.

About Genuine Mini

The original parts used by Mini to build your car are available as replacement parts under the “Genuine Mini” brand. Manufactured under the direction of Mini, expect excellent quality and a premium price since these parts are exclusively available through the Mini Dealership network.

You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your Mini are not necessarily manufactured by Mini. No cause for concern, as Mini designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for Mini for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine Mini parts box and find an OEM branded part inside, simply with the addition of a Mini logo.

Be sure to keep an eye out for OE tags on our product pages to quickly identify parts coming direct from OE manufacturers. That extra bit of insight could save you some serious money while shopping! Refer to our OE Academy for further information regarding the OE/OEM tags throughout the site.

51487307579 Hood Insulation Retrofit to 2007 MINI R56 S
RE: FCP: As always, prices are excellent and shipment is fast. Also, this was a large area product that easily could have been folded for shipment which would have put permanent creases in the semi-rigid insulation. But FCP shipped it in a large box to accommodate the full size of the insulation so it arrived in pristine condition. While searching for this product originally, customers from other suppliers (NOT FCP!) complained that they received a folded or rolled up item. Kudos to FCP! RE: Compatibility and Installation: Installed on my 2007 MINI R56 S. The 2007 didn't come with hood insulation and most of these early turbo models would melt the hood scoop when the car was shut off and the heat rose from the turbo via convection. Although the insulation I purchased from FCP wasn't technically compatible with these original turbo MINI's (and correctly was indicated as such by FCP!), it turns out that the only thing lacking was the corresponding mounting holes in the underside of the hood. Some other websites claim compatibility, but they don't mention that original turbo hoods don't have the proper mounting holes. "Superseding" replacement hoods for the early turbo models may have the holes, but most early turbo model owners have their original hoods. Using the insulation as a template, I marked and drilled the holes and then used the standard Genuine BMW 51481915964 plastic push clips to mount the insulation. For a few of the new holes in the hood next to the hood latching hardware, there was underlying metal reinforcement that precluded the use of the aforementioned clips, however for those holes I just used generic ribbed push-in clips available at most hardware stores. These generic clips also had a lower profile head than the BMW version and hence better cleared screw heads on the firewall-side hood-latch hardware. In the end, the insulation was a perfect fit and the hood stays remarkably cool! Installation tips: I positioned the insulation on top of the engine and aligned it to the soft foam hood gasket around the engine compartment. A few pieces of light duty double-sided Scotch tape lightly stuck the insulation to the foam gasket to stabilize it for the next step. With several pieces of heavy duty double-sided carpet tape on the top (backside) of the insulation around its perimeter, I closed and opened the hood such that the insulation was now stuck to the underside of the hood via the heavy duty double-sided tape. The lighter duty Scotch tape easily released from the foam gasket. I traced the hole positions through the insulation onto the hood, then unstuck the insulation. I did this a few times to be sure that I was always "finding" the best position for the insulation. Also look around the hood latches to confirm clearance. Whatever method you choose to drill the holes, I recommend a short piece of tubing or other method to stop the drill bit from breaking through suddenly and putting a dimple dent in your hood as viewed from outside. For my situation, I limited the drilling depth to 1/2", but you should check your specific situation. So this was my experience. If it didn't work out, it would NOT have been FCP's responsibility since they indicate correctly that this isn't officially compatible with my year/model. For me, to eliminate the melting hood scoop, it was worth the risk and in this case it paid off.
