Product Information

If your BMW's air conditioning system is not working properly or is not cooling well it could be due to a couple of problem areas. The A/C condenser is located at the front of your BMW in front of the radiator and can get pelted by road debris. If the fins are worn out, bent, or missing it could easily cause the condenser to fail. Cracks or visible severe damage will necessitate immediate replacement of the A/C condenser.

A/C Condenser

The A/C condenser is effectively a radiator for your vehicle's A/C system, designed to vent heat from the air conditioner's refrigerant. The A/C condenser is usually mounted to or near the main radiator in the front of the vehicle. Its function is to cool the high-pressure hot gas refrigerant coming from the compressor, condensing it back into a liquid. The cooled liquid leaves the condenser and flows through the A/C receiver drier on its way to the evaporator, where the evaporation process provides cool air to the cabin. A/C condensers are typically made completely out of aluminum and are fairly lightweight and delicate. Both sides of the A/C condenser are connected to the high and low-pressure pipes using bolted fittings and O-rings. Due to the high-pressure nature of the A/C system, even the most minor leak can cause complete A/C failure.

The most common reason for failure in A/C Condensers is from road debris, such as rocks or dirt, which causes punctures or bent fins. A punctured condenser will vent the refrigerant in the system, usually 134a, fairly quickly leading to immediate failure. Bent fins will not typically lead to condenser failure, but will reduce the effective cooling capacity due to reduced airflow.

Internal blockage is another common failure mode, mostly in older or higher-mileage vehicles that have not had regular A/C services. A blockage is usually caused by internal corrosion as a result of water accumulation in the system. The corrosion grows and clogs the narrow passages, leading to reduced efficiency and sometimes even cracks and leaks. Leaks can be hard to find, especially when the A/C condenser is peppered from thousands of miles of highway exposure. The best way to find a leak in your A/C system is to charge it with an oil containing reactive UV dye after a thorough engine bay cleaning, and running the air conditioning. If there is a leak, it will be easily viewed using a UV (black light) flashlight as a bright neon reflection.

A/C Condenser Failure Symptoms
  • Internal blockage: If the A/C system is rarely or never serviced, the A/C receiver drier will become saturated and allow water that has made it into the system to circulate along with the refrigerant. Water and R134a combine to create a corrosive acid, which causes corrosion buildup in the narrow passageways of the A/C condenser and evaporator, reducing efficiency and sometimes causing the A/C to stop working altogether.
  • External impact damage: The A/C Condenser is a lightweight aluminum assembly positioned right in the front of the car. It’s common to take a beating with prolonged high-speed miles, especially in the winter when the area uses rock salt on the roads. Even a pinhole leak is enough to eventually empty the A/C system, and leaks will not be readily identifiable without A/C dye.

About Mahle Behr

Mahle Behr GmbH & Co. KG is a German corporation active in the automobile industry, headquartered in Stuttgart-Feuerbach. It is a specialist for automotive air conditioning and engine cooling systems. Mahle began in 1920 when pistons made of heavy gray cast iron were being used in internal combustion engines for automobiles and there was a need for a new design. The Mahle brothers countered this trend by producing light-alloy pistons at their small, newly established company however the technology was still finicky and problems come up frequently. They soon determined that they needed to come up with a solution to keep dirt and dust out of the engine so they eventually developed air and oil filters as well. Their perseverance paid off and the light-alloy pistons began to take over the market. Today, half of all automobiles produced worldwide contain MAHLE components. MAHLE offers an extensive range of parts for everyone including pistons, cylinder liners, piston ring sets, bearings, assemblies, valves, valve train components, and air, oil, fuel, and cabin air filters. Their catalog and online database of aftermarket engine components is an indispensable reference. In early 2016, Stuttgart-based MAHLE GmbH increased its holding in the Behr Group from 36.85 percent to approximately 51 percent with the acquisition of all shares in the BWK GmbH holding company. The company now goes by Mahle-Behr.

Mini A/C Condenser - Mahle Behr
I used this to replace the OEM condenser on my 2005 Mini Cooper S that developed a leak. Fitment of the Mahle Behr is good enough, only issue is that the drier has an unknown volume compared with the OEM drier, but it definitely appears smaller. I serviced my system according to the OEM requirements, high and low side pressures are within specifications and everything seems to be working great. AC temps are as cold as factory. I only have two real complaints. One is that the shipping plugs are plastic and don't make a great seal to keep moisture out of the system (rubber plugs would be better). The other complaint is that the drier doesn't seem to be replaceable by itself, but I guess that doesn't really matter when dealing with FCP. Seems like a good value so far.

Mini A/C Condenser - Mahle Behr 64531490572
This part is not identical to the one that came from factory. If you dont wanna hear the story scroll all the way down to the bottom of this review. Me and the guys at fcp went back and forth for a few weeks tryna figure out why there was a discrepancy between oem part numbers and oem supplier part numbers. (Great guys by the way). Turns out the oems must have made a revision or something along the way and tried to slip it by. We tried different supplier brands to some avail. My personal experience is this part from Mahle, while still not perfect, is much better than the Nissans... and here is why. The Mahle side reservoir is smaller than factory. I found this through having the system completely drained, vacuumed, and then filled. It took less than oem spec quantity of refrigerant. Also note the cradle on the radiator for the lower left side of the ac condenser wont line up with this part. The condenser side reservoir sits too proud of the radiator, not allowing it to sit in that pocket. It screws in on the right side just fine but the left with it sitting up a little is a bit more difficult... but it goes in. And with the ac lines attached it seems pretty sturdy. I'm fairly picky with my cars and I'm honestly not too worried about it. So if your reading this, dont worry. But just know WHEN you run into this its "normal". My system runs the same, if not just a bit colder than it did before, when driving... this leads me to my next point. At idle the system doesn't get very cold upon start up. Its only when you start to drive and the compressor is spinning a bit faster that it seems to work. Once you have driven for 30 seconds it never stops working (blowing cold). But don't expect to start your car on a hot day and let it idle for 5 minutes and think its gonna be nice and cold inside. I think this has something to do with the quantity of refrigerant in the system being reduced. But dont quote me on that, just seems quite coincidental... As for the Nissans. I got one of those in the mail also. Just wont fit. If you ask me, dont bother with it. The side canister is massive. This one doesn't even try and use the OEM cradle. And if I'm being honest, i dont think the crash bar would he able to be installed with how large that canister is. I'm not joking its huge even compared to the OEM one. Do with that as you like, I'm happy with my Mahle part, and so far its had no issues in the 1k miles its had put on it. Nate

Looks like a flag waving in the wind right out of the box.
I had my 2003 Mini Cooper S in "service mode" (front clip removed) for a separate repair, so I decided to replace my slightly bent, original condenser "while I'm there". When I went to mount it to my new radiator (also replaced "while I'm there"), I was having trouble lining up the mounting tabs to the radiator and the lower rubber boot when I realized I was having trouble because the condenser is warped. It looks like a flag waving in the wind. There is about 1/2" difference from one side to the other. I didn't want to deal with sending it back right now because I needed to get my car running so I finally got it mounted up imperfectly. I didn't even have time to vacuum and fill the system with refrigerant, so I cannot verify that it doesn't leak, but I see no reason why it would. If it does leak when I do fill it up, I will make a warranty claim and replace it. The box arrived at my door in perfect condition so it was put in the box from the manufacturer like that and not damaged during shipping.

Questions & Answers

Ask a question
Question Posted by Anna
If my "ac clutch" isn't engaging... Is that part of this?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
May be related, however, we recommend connecting with a technician first to diagnose the problem before ordering a condenser.
Question Posted by a customer
Can this condenser be mounted flat?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
Not 100% following the question. It's designed to fit into the factory location on all Gen 1 Mini's as a direct replacement. This isn't mounted flat in that application, rather it's mounted vertically in front of the radiator which is the traditional mounting location for all condensers. Not that there is room in the listed applications for this to be mounted flat if it were it definitely wouldn't function effectively.
Question Posted by a customer
Can you provide physical dimensions.?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
This is a direct fit part for the years/models listed. Measurements shouldn't be a factor in how this fits. Measurements come in roughly 24 5/8" x 11 7/8" x 5/8"
Question Posted by Jamison
Does this include the AC Dryer unit or does that need to be purchased separately?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
The dryer is included with the condensor.
