Product Information

Trunk Lid Lift Support

The trunk lid lift support, also sometimes called a trunk strut or trunk shock, is a gas-charged cylinder that helps support and lift the trunk lid of a vehicle. Some trunk lift supports are also electric or hydraulic depending on the vehicle’s equipment. The trunk lift support assists the opening of the trunk or hatch, making it easier to open and sometimes opening it automatically. When you open the trunk, the lifting rod extends to push the lid open, ensuring it stays in place. Trunk lid supports remove the need to hold the trunk while loading and unloading and prevent it from slamming shut accidentally. Most European vehicles have a pair of supports, but occasionally there is just one. They are usually held onto the body and the trunk via posts and retaining clips, making them an easy DIY for most vehicle owners.

As a vehicle ages and the trunk support goes through hundreds of actuations, trunk lid lift supports will wear out and fail primarily due to the internal seal on the extending rod failing and losing pressure. When that happens, the trunk lid will feel heavier to open and slam shut unexpectedly. When replacing trunk lid supports that use a flat clip and post-mounting design, we recommend wearing some type of mechanic gloves since the retaining clips can be somewhat sharp and move unexpectedly when applying leverage with a screwdriver.

Trunk Lid Lift Support Failure Symptoms
  • Internal Leaks: If the gas piston is leaking internally, the trunk lid lift support won’t be able to leverage the trunk open
  • Age/Corrosion/Rust: If the trunk lift supports are exposed to the elements or are very old, it could hinder smooth operation, causing dead spots in the operation

Please READ!!!
This unit (2307500136) is a LID FRAME SHOCK. This is the single strut which assists the lid lifting towards the rear when operating the vario roof. Part number 2307500036 is the strut (2 required) which holds the trunk lid up when you open it. The poor reviews appear to be from those confused by the similar part number and accidentally substituted this for the lid lift assist struts.

Does not lift up SL55 AMG trunk
This struts didn’t lift up 2006 SL55 AMG trunk. I have no idea why! I bought it because I saw someone else positive review about it but it doesn’t give enough pressure to lift the trunk completely up position Note: Build quality, size 16 inches is perfect fitment. I am going to return them now

Trunk Lid Frame Shock on 2009 SL550
Replacement took ~5min. Flipped the trunk lid back (by starting roof opening sequence..) without putting the trunk lid in the high up service position...then from the side of the car reached easily in to unhook the metal clips on the top and bottom... New gas strut can be pushed in with just a little bit of pressing on the ball joint connector. Done.

Ask a question
Question Posted by Janet
What is the dimensions of this truck shock? Length & where length to where rubber collar ends and plunger begins?
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
The extended length of these will be 17.72 inches, not strong enough to compress these by hand, but the length of the tube is 10.25 including the length of the mounting tab.
