Air Suspension Strut Set

The suspension air struts use a shock body with an adjustable airbag that acts as the spring to support the weight of the vehicle. Air suspension provides for dynamic suspension tuning that adapts to changing road conditions to enhance the performance and driving characteristics of your vehicle. A common failure point on an air strut is an air leak through a punctured air spring, or a leaking air spring seal or fitting. The air upper and lower strut mounts use rubber bushings to absorb impact and over time the rubber can stretch, degrade, and oxidize leading to clunking over bumps.

Air Suspension Strut Set Failure Symptoms

  • Sagging ride height: The car will sit lower and sag
  • Rough ride: The ride will be noisier and rougher
  • Sloppy handling: The car will handle poorly when turning or going over bumps
  • Uneven tire wear: The tires may have small waves on the surface, or the tread may develop high and low spots
Air Shock Absorber

An air suspension strut is a key component in vehicles equipped with air suspension systems. It combines a traditional shock absorber with an air spring (a rubber bladder filled with pressurized air). The strut supports the vehicle’s weight, absorbs road impacts, and adjusts ride height for comfort and handling. Over time, the air bladder, seals, or internal shock can wear out, leading to ride and handling issues.

Air Shock Absorber Failure Symptoms
  • Sagging or uneven ride height – one corner or the entire vehicle sits lower than normal.
  • Rough or bouncy ride – poor damping from a worn shock or air bladder leak.
  • Air compressor overuse – system runs constantly to compensate for air leaks in the strut.

Questions & Answers

Question Posted by David
I had another question about the air suspension-it seems that new struts have an issue with the communication to automaticly lower and raise the car for oem parts that according to Arnott, is not an issue in their remanufactured struts, but a bypass relay is installed in the new air struts, and shuts off communication with the computer-- and if it fails it is easily accessed on the outside of the strut. When I spoke with a Bilstein rep in ohio at their plant, he was really rude and I was just a peon to him and he told me their warranty is only 2 years on air struts and not lifetime like Arnott, who even were very nice on the phone with my inquiry about their products-heck my car had them on it from the factory when it was originally assembled, had it up on the lift to balance the tires and sure enough the rebuilt numbers and Arnott name are on the product-do you think Arnott would replace them for free as per their warranty? and is it necessary to change out the compressor-bilstein uses AMK products so they must be good? thanks alot-df
Answer (Posted by FCP Euro Products Team)
The most common issue we encounter is a new strut will not communicate because the wiring is not snapped into place correctly after installation, this is a super common issue. Arnott will not replace your units for free if you did not originally purchase them but you do have the option of sending your units to them for refurb. Changing out the compressor is never a prerequisite
