If your engine was updated to the later plastic valve covers this kit will not fit your vehicle.

This service kit is for M156 engines with aluminum valve covers. Plastic covers were typically introduced in the 2012 model year.

We recommend purchasing a factory style timing tool kit such as the one purchased here when servicing the M156 engine.

We also recommend replacement the hydraulic valve lifters as they are a common failure item on this platform

As far as I can find there is no mention of these being updated or upgraded components as Elring is the OE manufacturer.

As the kit does not include head gaskets is it fair to interpret that it is meant for the bolt by bolt replacement method?

That is correct, this kit is meant to replace the bolts one by one.

If you are asking that question, you are probably a good candidate for aftermarket headstuds. With that being said these studs are perfectly capable of handling the cylinder pressures you would see on a typical aftermarket low boost power adder kit
