Hood Insulation Pad

A hood insulation pad is a layer of insulating material attached to the underside of a vehicle’s hood. Its primary functions are to reduce engine noise heard inside and outside the cabin, protect the hood’s paint from engine heat, and sometimes provide limited fire protection by slowing flame spread. Over time, the insulation pad can degrade due to heat, vibration, and exposure to fluids or contaminants.

Hood Insulation Pad Failure Symptoms
  • Noise increase – more engine noise or vibration heard in the cabin or outside.
  • Heat damage – hood paint fading, discoloration, or warping from excess engine heat.

SL500 hood pad
Ordered this pad replacement in June of 2020 for a 1997 SL 500 that has 52K original miles and is always garaged. As with all my cars after they are driven I raise the hood to disapate the heat more quickly to protect plastic and rubber parts. I noted recently the foam pad was getting fragile and after I drove it recently raised the hood to find a square section of the pad had fallen out. I thought with the care this car is given this pad would last longer than five years. Unfortunately the pads are backordered with no notice of when it will be back in stock. I have to wonder if the MB factory part would last longer.

Perfect Fit
This hood pad was a perfect fit for my 99 SL500. This was my first time doing this kind of repair, and I opted to use 3M 08090 as the adhesive. So far, after 5 months, it is holding well. Make sure to cover your engine bay so adhesive doesn't get on it. I used my old fasteners and none of them broke with re-use.

Apparently these liners always come rolled up. Unfortunately the fold marks are not going away even after having it laid flat for 2 weeks. It will work but won't look great.

Great Hood Pad!
As an alternative to the OE hood pad, this one does a great job. The fitment is correct as is the material. When replacing, be sure to remove the plastic rivets along the leading edge of the hood in advance so you can order replacements prior to replacing the hood pad. If you're careful, removing the rivets won't be difficult and you'll be able to reuse all of them. Using 3M Super Trim Adhesive applied to the hood and hood pad you can have this installed and looking nice in a relatively short about of time.

Wurth has a high temp adhesive that should work quite well. Unfortunately I do not have a recommendation for removal of the old pad
