The most common fuel pump failure symptoms include stalling, no starts or hard starts, and momentary power loss during steady state driving. Factors that decrease fuel pump performance include dirt or restrictions from fuel filters, corroded fuel pump harness connections, and issues with the fuel pump control system such as the FSCU/Engine computer/fuel pressure relay etc. When replacing your fuel pump, we also recommend replacing your fuel filter fuel pump relay (where applicable).

Fuel Pump

A Fuel Pump is responsible for transferring fuel from the tank to the engine at the appropriate pressure. By delivering a consistent fuel flow, the fuel pump ensures the engine has the right fuel-air mixture for combustion, allowing the vehicle to run smoothly. Most modern vehicles use electric fuel pumps, which are typically located inside the fuel tank.

Fuel Pump Failure Symptoms
  • Difficulty Starting or No Start: A failing fuel pump may struggle to deliver fuel at the required pressure, resulting in hard starting or, in severe cases, a no-start condition. This is particularly noticeable during cold starts
  • Engine Stalling or Sputtering: If the fuel pump intermittently loses power or pressure, the engine may stall, sputter, or hesitate while driving, especially under heavy acceleration or at high speeds. This is often a sign of insufficient fuel flow
  • Loss of Power Under Load: A faulty fuel pump may not be able to provide the increased fuel flow needed during activities that require more power, such as driving uphill or accelerating quickly. This can cause a noticeable loss of power or hesitation in response

I have a 2014 Mercedes ML 350 AWD (gas) and was looking to replace the in tank fuel pump. I have no access point under the seat since it’s a 2014, so how am I able to tell if my fuel pump is on the right side as described in the caption before I purchase it?

All of the service information I have access to suggest the location of the pump access cover is indeed underneath the rear passenger side seat/flooring. The round cap is glued from the factory and must be pried off. If for some reason you vehicle does not have an access inside to the tank, the tank will have to be removed to replace the pump. I would suggest emailing our service department at service@fcpeuro.com with your full vin and this request so they can further investigate and advise.
