Product Information

Drive Shaft

A driveshaft is a rotating metal shaft that transmits power from the transmission to the rear wheels in a vehicle, and signs of a failing driveshaft include: noticeable vibrations while driving, shuddering when accelerating, loud clicking or clunking noises, squeaking sounds, and difficulty turning, often accompanied by shaking coming from underneath the car; all of which are usually caused by worn-out U-joints or center bearing issues within the driveshaft assembly.

Drive Shaft Failure Symptoms
  • Vibrations: This is the most common sign of a failing driveshaft, often felt as a shaking sensation while driving, especially at higher speeds
  • Shuddering upon acceleration: When accelerating from a stop, the car may jerk or shudder due to a damaged driveshaft struggling to deliver smooth power
  • Noises: Clicking, clunking, squeaking, or rattling sounds coming from the drivetrain area can indicate worn components within the driveshaft

About Genuine Mercedes

The original parts used by Mercedes Benz to build your car are available as replacement parts under the “Genuine Mercedes Benz” brand. Manufactured under the direction of Mercedes Benz, expect excellent quality and a premium price since these parts are exclusively available through the Mercedes Benz Dealership network.

You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your Mercedes-Benz are not necessarily manufactured by Mercedes-Benz. No cause for concern, as Mercedes-Benz designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for Mercedes-Benz for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine Mercedes-Benz parts box and find an OEM branded part inside, simply with the addition of a Mercedes-Benz logo.

Be sure to keep an eye out for OE tags on our product pages to quickly identify parts coming direct from OE manufacturers. That extra bit of insight could save you some serious money while shopping! Refer to our OE Academy for further information regarding the OE/OEM tags throughout the site.

An annoying task.
Make sure you check your front propeller shaft. This is usually a known problem on all 4matics that is overlooked. If your 4matic is in the 150 to 200k mile range. Order a replacement shield if original is missing or damage. Most and even professional mechanics don’t remember to remove the 5 bolts from the front differential. There you will have plenty of space in the void to patiently line up the input shaft on the transfer-case. Make sure transfer case yoke integrity and may think about doing transfer case bearings as well. If you’re in there you should also opt for ordering motor mounts and also wheel bearings if your vehicle is high mileage. It’s definitely an annoying job but can be done on the ground with front wheels in the air on safety stands.
