Engine Valve Cover Gasket

The valve cover gasket seals the valve cover to the uppermost portion of your engine’s cylinder head and keeps oil and oil vapors from leaking at that connection. It must have some amount of crush or elasticity to fill in gaps between the two surfaces, sealing the connection. Typically on most modern vehicles the valve cover gasket is made from rubber or other elastomer materials. Sometimes this can be just a rubber gasket, and others it may be reinforced with metals or other materials to lend more strength and rigidity to the application.

Older classic European cars may use a cork or similar natural material. Both are sensitive to the installation process and tightening torques, but you must take extra special care with cork gaskets to avoid crushing the gasket and causing a leak.

Engine Valve Cover Gasket Failure Symptoms
  • Age: As a rubber valve cover gasket ages, it will become hard and brittle, eventually allowing oil to leak at the valve cover and cylinder head junction. Cork and natural materials will begin to break down and allow Oil to pass
  • Physical Damage: Typically this is from incorrect installation. Using too much tightening torque on the valve cover gasket bolts or fasteners can cause physical damage to the gasket but overcompressing or crushing it beyond its ability to seal the surface of the valve cover and the cylinder head.
  • Chemical Damage: Using incompatible chemical gasket maker or sealing agents can cause reactions and failure of the gasket itself. Sometimes this can be because of the material itself, or the design of the gasket and the way it is intended to be sealed by the manufacturer.
  • Obvious Oil leaks: A noticeable engine oil leak is the most common symptom of a bad valve cover gasket. This can appear in several different ways, the most common of which is oil seepage or obvious leaks running down the cylinder head from the valve cover.
  • Mysterious Oil Leaks: Because of airflow through the engine bay and the exact conditions under which a valve cover gasket leaks, it is possible to have a “mystery” oil leak where oil residue and moisture gather in an unusual or unlikely spot. If you see this and have no other obvious causes, a quick degrease and careful monitoring could point you in the direction of a bad valve cover gasket
  • Air intake leaks/faults: Because the valve cover gasket is a crucial seal for the engine, a completely failed or very bad valve cover gasket leak can result in a check engine light or rough running due to incorrect airflow either getting inside the engine or escaping through the leak.
  • Burning oil smell: One of the most common engine oil leaks is from the valve cover gasket, and it is common for oil to leak while the car is sitting. Once you start the engine and begin to drive the car, the oil that has collected on the exhaust manifold will burn off, creating a noticeable oil smell while driving.

About Genuine Mercedes

The original parts used by Mercedes Benz to build your car are available as replacement parts under the “Genuine Mercedes Benz” brand. Manufactured under the direction of Mercedes Benz, expect excellent quality and a premium price since these parts are exclusively available through the Mercedes Benz Dealership network.

You may not realize this, but the parts that make up your Mercedes-Benz are not necessarily manufactured by Mercedes-Benz. No cause for concern, as Mercedes-Benz designs the part, hires a manufacturer, and ensures its quality to you. In fact, many of these manufacturers have been making parts for Mercedes-Benz for decades. In our industry these manufacturers are called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers), and these are often brands you recognize, including Lemforder, ZF, Sachs, Bosch, Valeo, Zimmermann, Siemens VDO, Corteco, and more. Don’t be surprised to open that Genuine Mercedes-Benz parts box and find an OEM branded part inside, simply with the addition of a Mercedes-Benz logo.

Be sure to keep an eye out for OE tags on our product pages to quickly identify parts coming direct from OE manufacturers. That extra bit of insight could save you some serious money while shopping! Refer to our OE Academy for further information regarding the OE/OEM tags throughout the site.

everything about replacing this was annoying, time will tell.
These are MUCH more irritating to replace on an m275 than on a m113k.... we'll see how they hold up. I'll be pretty butthurt if they only hold up for a couple years like on the m113k. You have to take the airbox and coilpack off (I guess you could just pull it out far enough so you can get to the valve cover bolts beneath), the breather unit on the front of the valve cover, cam sensor plug at the back of the valve cover, along with a couple vacuum lines (of which the wird molded one BROKE because it was hardened from age/heat- MAKE SURE YOU CAN FIND A REPLACEMENT ONLINE (2750180282 or 2750180682)- I bought the only one in the country that I could find on ebay). Also whoever decided to make this rube goldberg engine made a provision for a zip tie to go through the back of the valve cover, so you have to clip it to detach it from some random wires. The install/ removal is TIGHT - I pulled the intercooler box up harder than I felt comfortable with the bungie cables, undid a bolt at the back of the intercooler fill nozzle so the metal intercooler pipe would move, then had to use a wood hammer handle to absolutely CRAM the pipe that goes right above the back of the valve cover back far enough so I could reinstall it without dislocating the newly installed gasket. This is one of those jobs that it may be worth it to pay somebody to do... The right side (passenger) valve cover looks like it may be somewhat easier thankfully. Torque values for the valve cover bolts are really low, 4nm for newer v12s, 9nm for older. I split the difference at like 60-65 inch-lbs of torque. Good riddance
